Re: How do you learn the heel command

Use a food lure. Hold a treat in your hand, so your pup knows you have it. Hol dit by your left side where you want your pup's nose to be, say 'heel' and give the treat. Use another treat, walk a step or two, say 'heel' (if she is in the right place) and give the treat. Pup should stay in the correct position as she will follow the treat. Repeat, giving her a treat every few steps.

Duke will do anything for cheese, I held small pieces between my fingers so he could smell it possibly lick it but he couldn't snatch it. I started with a few steps and loads of praise including the cheese between my fingers and built it up.

You will be able to tell when your puppy becomes distracted stop the exercise and praise before puppy wonders, just to get puppies attention back.

Everyone has pretty much covered it.As a trainer we have had many pups and we need to keep their sessions short, say 5-10mins,depending how old,and about three times a day.You should always have your pup on the left and as you lead off, lead with your left leg saying heel, using the food lure. Our dogs also love the garlic polony knobs-just make sure you dice it in very small squares..You dont want to make him ill.You should join your local Canine Association. They should have lots of classes for you to train in,giving him socialization at the same time.Happy training..

Puppy treats made zach hyper, i think its all the additives in them lol

So we just used sausage, liver or chicken chopped up really small just so he gets the taste and doesnt get full too quickly

Re: How do you learn the heel command

Treats are easy to get, as a rule of thumb, the smellier the better. Make sure you cut them into tiny pieces though so you don't spoil his appetite. I personally use hotdogs, buy the cheap tin ones, they should be fine, one hotdog cut into 30-40 pieces should be enough to keep him going for hours (even days!).

Make sure to also start weaning him off the treats as well, so give him a treat with a 'good dog/boy/girl' praise when he has heel'd. Just start giving him a treat every other time, whilst still verbally praising him, over time, one treat every 3 times and increase. This will be better for his diet and for your bank balance!
