Dog Obedience - what book to begin with?

Hiya,

I would like to look into doing advanced obedience with Mac when he's a bit older. He is doing puppy classes at the moment still and he loves it. He picks things up really quickly. The lady taking the classes is great and she does advanced obedience classes and flyball which I hope he may enjoy too.

Can anyone advise a good book - not too in depth - just a starter one with exercises in it and tips about teaching the dog? Just to have a read at and maybe try and see how he gets on with things to start with. I know he's young and I won't overload him with it all but he may love it and be really into it.

Thanks,

Laura

I should say before anyone points it out that I am aware they shouldn't do flyball etc until they are over a year. I've been reading the posts!

Hiya,

Thanks for that - I'll check them out! He loves clicker training and sits with a paw up as soon as he sees me reach for it! Little monkey.

Lightbulb Re: Dog Obedience: not books, but Levels + Rally-O?

those books are all excellent -
Rally-O is a wonderful, less-strict introduction to obedience, if it is available.
the cards for the various exercises are self-explanatory, + good practice.

Levels-Training is a wonderful augmentation to any training; pet, comp-obed, agility, anything...
as it is so good with proofing under various distractions + circs.
all my best,
--- terry

Smile Re: Dog Obedience - what book to begin with?

I bought this one for my sister to read - Clicker Training for Dogs: Amazon.co.uk: Karen Pryor: Books It's easy to understand (not that my sister's dim but I don't see the point in instructional books being too 'deep' and scientific.)

Re: Dog Obedience - what book to begin with?

I have the Morgan Spector book and it's very good, it's the first one I'd reccommend if you're looking for a proper obedience clocker book.
