Re: Febuary training challenge
hey nicky, can you post the vid you mentioned too, so people can see the trick in action?
just a thought everyone, please make sure you use an appropriate size toy when teaching the trick as there is the obvious risk of choking with having it in their mouth whilst on their backs! I know its obvious and prob dont need to say, but better safe than sorry ![]() Ok, for the behavioural challange, I am going to focus on maggie sitting calmly on her mat when people come in until she is released to greet...and then she has to greet nicely with all 4 paws on the floor!!!

Re: Febuary training challenge
For the ball in mouth one, it depends on peoples levels and age of dogs etc...but was thinking that as an intial step, the roll over onto back could be taught as the trick first, if the ball thing is too much straight away.

Re: Febuary training challenge
The dog doesn't put the ball back into its mouth into the video though - it's two seperate takes of the same trick. Still pretty neat though!
I also love the roll-self-in-blanket trick. Too cute. |

re the trick-training -
remember that in a CHAIN of behaviors, the last is taught First... so whats last? then the just-prior step gets added to the now-known last-step, and so on. thus the dog is always performing the in-learning or latest bit, THEN the fluent known parts. breaking the action down into small, easily-achieved steps takes practice. hope this helps, i can;t wait for videos! happy training, --- terry

Re: Febuary training challenge
I started to teach Junior Dog to say her prayers tonight. Only did about 20 mins with the clicker, but so far we've got her orienting to the chair, sitting in front of it and putting both paws up. Not bad to start with. Tomorrow - brush up on that, and if she seems confident will introduce lowering of head between paws.
I love trick training - so much so that I tend to neglect the formal stuff if I don't give myself a metaphorical slap from time to time ![]() ETA here she is, doing her "shy" thing and shutting the kitchen door. It was very early days for the door trick - you can now send her to shut it from another room ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UduqzUNZI9w Last edited by Colliepoodle; 08-02-2010 at 08:51 PM.. |

very cool! good dog, Boo!
i had to laugh when i saw her try the shy-thing just -once- more, when U asked her to get the door... the less-familiar behavior, with a shorter history of reward! *can;t i just do this again...? i'm already here... * good try, Boo! but no, shut the door... thanks for the peek, --- terry
