Re: Febuary training challenge

I want to teach "limp". I tried it a while back but never got further than her holding a paw up. MOving on to holding it up while she actually took steps was taking too long so I gave up. I am SO impatient

And I started getting her to hold a back leg up on the cue "How does a boy dog go to the toilet?" - must move on with that too

Re: Febuary training challenge

Ok well how about limp is the trick challenge and we build up to the other one. Even a 7 week old puppy should be able to learn it

Oh dear! I am sooo far behind on the ole dog tricks. He sits on command, speaks and now does paw. He is really bad at lay down roll over, in his bed he will lay down if I tell him to but out of it he will roll on his back straight away, trying to work on this. Will work on Chazz sitting when the door bell rings and greeting with paws on floor when I tell him.

hey, hammy! :--)
try getting the CLICK as soon as the elbows hit the ground, and have the treat under his nose before he gets his shoulder down
to roll - this is a timing problem, U need to interrupt the *roll* before he commits to it.

if U have trouble getting down to him / bending-over to reach him, work DOWN on a hassock or other raised / padded surface;
test it when he seems to have it nailed by moving to the floor, if he fails there, Do Not CLICK but just move him back onto
the raised-surface + practice some more.

changing Ur cue, especially the hand-cue, can help him differentiate DOWN from ROLL.
just re-label DOWN with a new signal, and start over - the 2nd time is usually 10% of the initial
teaching / learning time, + with the new *clear* un-tainted cue, he should learn at light-speed.

all my best,
--- terry

Re: Febuary training challenge

Egads -- just had a horrific barking fit from Nunuk when he saw some men go into the neighbours house, so I checked here and am seeing that the thread has gone over to tricks...

So, I hope folks are OK with this -- i'm going to start another thread to focus on the door thing. Not as much fun but VERY practical. And I do need help with this!

Re: Febuary training challenge

Hi Fyfer, we are doing both - there is a trick and a behavioural element each month.

The trick has been changed and they were discussing this...I think nicky has updated it on the original post.

But the other part has remained the same.

I am trying to get maggie to sit on her mat until visitors are in by reinforcing her 'go to mat' training i already did, using the doorbell as a cue for her to go to the mat and then asking for a wait. Then if she comes off her mat, i am not opening the door, but will continue to open the door for a calm response and staying on her mat...

Then when visitors come in I will give her a release cue to 'go greet' and I want all 4 paws on the floor...so if she doesnt do this, people will turn their backs and if she does keep them on the floor, she will get fuss and praise and i will click her and reward too.

I wont just wait for visitors though, I am setting it up so that we can rehearse this lots before real visitors turn up!

I dont have problems with the barking...but am sure we can move the conversation to helping you with this...

Re: Febuary training challenge

yeah both can be discussed here fyfer. Keep it all in one then it would be easier.

We're doing both this month. I found waving a bit of cheese in front of him and then giving him it when he's calm and sitting helped with that. You're not reinforcing the barking but the staying calm
