To be perfectl;y honest I think an inexperienced p[erson trying to train a dog to attack or defend anyone is aksing for serious trouble, including your dog potentially ending up PTS.

As far as I know, there are very strict laws in this country about owning or training a guard dog. I woudl also be discoruaging guarding instincts in a guarding breed as much as possible if they are a pet, as it can easily get out of hand. A bark when someone approaches the door is OK, if you find it acceptable (I don't!) but anything else is a no no.

If your dog bit an intruder in your house, chances are he could be PTS. Maybe that shouldn't happen but it can and does.

Why not just keep him as a pet? I have spent the majority of my life living alone with three children as my husband worked away. I never felt the need for a guard dog.

I totally agree with this.

Of course I would like my dog to "protect" me if I was being attacked or something similar... but actually thinking about it, no I wouldn't, the person who is attacking me or intruding on my property could then end up hurting my dog, and I would feel extremely guilty for this. And of course... dogs that attack/bite people can end up being destroyed, not good... I certainly wouldn't want that.

Barking to let you know someone's about is okay if you want to put up with that. But to be aggressive as in biting someone if they attack you or break in, I wouldn't have that personally. I know it's natural in some dogs, I'm not saying you can control it 100%, but I do not agree with training a dog to be like this... keep and treat it as a pet.

I would agree with Sitmus that I would never train any dog to be aggressive. Unless you a police dog handler I would say its best for you to socialize your dog to behave well with all people. If its any help at all my dog Rabbit is very socialized but if he hears an unusual noise in the middle of the night he automatically does a guard dog growl and bark. I never trained him to do that, he's always done that. His half sister Gina she would happily let in anyone in the house and is totally different!

I'm not the best person in the world of putting my thoughts down or saying/typing what I actually mean so might as well ignore this thread because what I put down really doesn't make any sense to me.

Absolutely correct. If you have a German Shepherd Dog, it is important to socialise them from an early age. Their guarding instinct will invariably kick in if needed. I have always felt perfectly safe with mine, without the need for guarding lessons.

Anyhow the best deterrent to burglars entering your home is a dog barking. The noise alone scares them off and also the burglar does not know if the dog is gonna go for them or not do they?

A copper told me that. A dogs bark is better than a burglar alarm, security locks and all of that.

So you dont need to train your dog to attack people.
