Re: Weaving Poles - Agility
how i was shown, was have the dog on lead stand at the side of the poles have a fav toy or treats in one hand with the lead, slowly go backwards, weaving your hand in and out and every time they move though one pole give a treat and the toy at the end.
while doing this say weave. then when they get used to this give the treat every other pole and so on until treat comes at the end, then you can start to speed it up when they are used to going through the poles.

Re: Weaving Poles - Agility
Most dogs don't get the point of weave poles so you have to sound really excited about them while you do them and use the lead to weave them through.
My ridgeback boxer has been doing agility training for 3 years and because of his size he has only just started to understand them and when I went last week it was the first time he has manage to do it all by himself I was so proud but he is an exception most get it before 3 years! In the end my son and myself would stand either side and block him with our knees while I guided him with his collar - at last he has learnt to bend his body! |

Re: Weaving Poles - Agility
Use a clicker, it is excellent for teaching the weave, start with three poles, lure him in with food in your right hand, lead & clicker in left, as his body turns as you lure him round the second pole click, then feed as he comes out of the third. Do this until he does it without being lured, it usually takes about 8 short sessions, then moe on to six..
Another way is to set your poles apart at an outwards angle, and get the dog running through gradually moving the pole in, this also teaches the dog to move its body and weave. |

Re: Weaving Poles - Agility
With Insane on this one. My GSD took ages to get the weaves, he was about 4yrs old before he would do them properly. If your dog is large, it's easier to hold the collar than the lead, guide him through & I was taught to say 'through' & 'heel' as he weaved. I also block the exit with my knee. A toy or treat also works well if they will follow it, Zak wasn't that bothered, but Tilly will follow a treat. Most trainers will tell you that it's the hardest bit of equipment to teach. I now shout 'weaveeeeeeeeeeeeeee' in a very excited high pitched voice to get Zak doing them quickly.
