Pete's owner is on a distinguished road
Question Settling him down once we've been on a walk ?

Hello everyone,

Pete, our 11 month border collie, has been with us only a week. He gets nice longs walks (an hour), but it takes him about another hour to settle down in the house once we come back. He's into everything, jumps up at the table etc. Tries to chew the 'wrong' things.

I tried letting him out in the back garden to continue being outside, and he then started hurtling from end to the other of the garden at great speed, and got himself even more hyper !

After an hour, he eventually settled down to sleep.

How do we settle him down once the walk is over ?

He's a collie, you dont

How many walks does he get a day? What about training?

Its easier to wear out a collie mentally, than it is physically.

Re: Settling him down once we've been on a walk ?

Welcome to the world of collie ownership! I only have a collie x but my god she goes for hours and she's 13 years old!!

I would get in as many walks, play times and training sessions in as you can. You'll be thanking us soon enough lol!

Re: Settling him down once we've been on a walk ?

I'm sure someone more experienced than me will tell me if I am way off the mark here, but I think I remember reading on here somewhere about a dog being a hyper after walks...someone suggested doing some training when you get back (sit, give paw, roll over type stuff). This helps stimulate them mentally as well as physically.

I have never owned a collie but I do know they're mighty clever and keeping them stimulated mentally as well as physically is half the battle.

Re: Settling him down once we've been on a walk ?

Logan can be a bit like that so we have a box of toys that he isn't usually allowed to have and give him a couple of those to play with, one is a kong on a rope which he loves and he holds the rope in his mouth and plays like mad with it, he also loves coming home to his kong stuffed which he sometimes has and that encourages him to 'wind down a bit'!

But like everyone says he is a collie and that is just what they are like, also mentioned earlier, the food can make a big difference, i used to have Matrix on Eukanuba premium and he was nutty as a fruitcake, he is now on royal canin and seems a lot calmer! Either that or he has just grown up a bit!! LOL
