Dogs and Cows

On our walks in the field , there are two 'breaks' in the hedgerow (a water trough and a gate) , on different sections of the field to two other fields that often have cows hanging around there (beautiful Jerseys , very friendly too)
Toffee never shows any aggression towards the cows , he is curious and ive allowed him to say hello to them when on the lead , one licked his head the other week , lol

The thing is I allow him off lead in the field, but never when we reach those two sections as I couldnt hand on heart say he wouldnt try to get thru to them , which of course is a no-no ... how can I train him so I dont have to call him back and put the lead on before we reach those two areas ?

His recall is pretty good, but not 100%

Re: Dogs and Cows

Have a high reward treat to hand such as cheese or chicken and get him to heal while walking past do it while the cows are not in it first and so he gets used to walkin past these gaps he will soon learn that if he stays close he gets a reward , hopefully the cheese is more interesting than the cows .

Re: Dogs and Cows

you need to be very wary around cows especially if you have a dog,a lady was killed by cows near me recently while walking her dogs, they were badly injured to,and regarded as friendly.(the cows)
