Do some dogs just not get on

Hi im Chantelle and im new and im so sorry but i have a question already.

My male mongrel Rocks is 4 and neutered. Although he has calmed down a lot he still can have some dog on dog aggression. This only seems to be however with other dominant males usually unneutered. The way he approaches dogs and his rigid frame only seems to appear around other male dogs with the same problem, neither wanting to back down. Putting him on the lead only makes him worse. I try to avoid these dogs i know there may be 'problems' with but the run the length of the park to see us which to be fair Rocks never does. Hes much more happy to play with me and his ball. How do i avoid these situations if the dogs follow us?
Otherwise Rocks is great with kids, and good with dogs and everything really. Theres just certain dogs that he simply clashes with. These scraps are minor and have never resulted in an injury but i was wondering will he always have that dominant streak. He's a baby most of the time and runs away when most dogs turn on him and is too scared to get his ball if another dog runs for it. Yet he goes head to head with some males always more of less the same size and age as him BUT unneutered.
I dont understand it at all. He used to only fight because of his dominant humping, even though thats stopped the scraps have flared up again ill be it only recently but theres been three in the past week.
Are there just some dogs that dont get on? Are they in any way similar to people that some dogs will never be friends?
Please help any advice is welcome
thankyou chantelle x

Re: Do some dogs just not get on

it is known for dogs not to like other breeds of dogs , try and see if there is a pattern in the breed maybe . your dog does not sound like the problem to me, it sounds like these other dogs are in need of training and not much u can do about that im affraid

Re: Do some dogs just not get on

Most dogs will be agressive out of fear , on the lead he has no choice of running away which is why he will seem more angry , in this situation you need to move him away from the other dog as quickly and calmly as possible , showing him its ok to do this will make him accept your descision to move away , Dogs also communicate in ways we dont such as posture , smell ect and he could be reacting more to the other dogs behaviour as a result , meaning it may not be his choice to behave like this it may be in reaction to the other dogs advances . At best you should make sure his recall is perfect meaning if you are not close enough to an oncoming dog you can be assured he will come when called so that you can controll the situation and walk the other way .

This would be ok if he showed these signs all the time its just occasionally with the odd dog as i understand , In my opinion if he is well behaved most of the time and there are the odd issues then in the world we live in at the moment with people happy to take legal steps i would avoid him getting into scrapes in the first place , you cannot controll the other dog and its actions ,you can only controll your own dog and hope the other owners are understanding if a scuffle arrises .

obviously not all dogs dislike certain dogs but from what i have seen some do for example

some big dogs dont like smaller breeds im not sure why might be because small dogs can have the big dog personality . but i am by no means saying all dogs dislike certain breeds

same as us we dont like certain types of peopel

Red face Re: Do some dogs just not get on

Well i am very much up for avoiding scraps altogether to be fair....i understand where all of you are coming from and it his behaviour does not happen often....his recall is excellent btw so i will simply avoid any future 'problematic' situations by leaving the park and returning later..... so are you saying andrea that Rocks is not a downout aggressive dogs and he may simply be reacting to the other dogs signals??? i think i understand it now thankyou all so very much x
