Re: Help Withe Crazy Puppies

Having two young puppies is a recipe for disaster in my opinion. Are they both going to training classes? What is your previous experience with dogs? What food are you feeding them? Labs are bouncy dogs until they are about seven years old (ie they never grow up) so you'll be in this for a long time to come.

Re: Help Withe Crazy Puppies

Honestly, that is very normal for retrievers. They will also take to leaping up at people when fully grown unless you spend a long time training them out of it.

I have one retriever and he is incredibly bouncy still at 16 months old. You need to make sure they have a decent relationship with you, as opposed to each other first. It will be hard, good luck.

Re: Help Withe Crazy Puppies

Hi

Phew!!! Two puppies, I presume from the same litter, are to be honest a bit of a nightmare. I am presuming also they are in the house, not working dogs in a kennel situation, so if you have two puppies and a couple of children, you really do have your work cut out.

The problems with having two puppies are mainly that they interact with each other and tend to bond with each other and not with you as the owner. Therefore, it is always much harder to teach them anything!! I would never ever suggest anyone gets two puppies at the same time.

However, you are in the situation now and you need to 'manage' it as best as you can.

Firstly, a puppy running around and being a bit mad is normal, however they normally do this with you and have a good play and fall asleep, as they are doing it with each other, you will end up trying to intervene and do some damage limitation. I am not sure how old they are, but presume they are fairly young!

I would make sure you have an area, or a large crate where the puppies can go when things get a bit manic, also the children are not allowed to have access to either. Ideally this would be in the corner of the kitchen, so they can see you, you them and hear and note what is going on around them.

Try and have some basic rules with everyone. No tugging/pulling games, if Puppies jump up, turn away, walk away, ignore, don't scream, shout, run giggle etc. all of which will make things worse!

If the puppies are play fighting and it gets out of control, put them in their area or crate with some interesting things to play with - stuffed Kongs, but have three, always one extra to prevent agruments, if one puppy pushes another one out then there is another to go to etc. etc. Just an old cardboard box will keep them amused for half hour or so.

Have a good routine in place, lots of structure. i.e. out in the garden in the morning, run around etc. maybe back in the pen for breakfast then a little bit of exercise, if they are old enough to walk out then take them both for a run, but do some training separately. Make a point of splitting them up and doing as much as you can separately.

I don't know if you have had dogs before, but it is a bit of a nighmare for the first few months and you have it twice over!!! Get yourself to a training class, however, you will have to take someone else with you, it is impossible to train two dogs at the same time.

Make sure you check the class out first, look for one that has apdt trainers, and go along before you take the dogs and check it out, any harsh handling, bored dogs, or fed up owners, find another.

Best of luck, you have your work cut out with two labs, but you are right to start putting something in place now. You don't say if they are dogs or bitches either, something else you may need to think about in the future?!

Kate

Re: Help Withe Crazy Puppies

sorry to have to tell you but pedigree dog food is rubbish and could well be adding to your problems, you need to switch (gradually replace some of the pedigree a bit at a time to reduce the risk of upset tummies) to something that has no artificial colours, flavours or additives. It's like giving a toddler loads of E numbers and then watching them bounce off the walls!!
Some good makes are wellness, go natural and natures logic but if you google it Im sure you will find other makes as well.
My puppy is 15 weeks and if he has any artificial additives he goes so hyper, I check and re check all the ingredients on everything now.
Good luck and please post some pics

Re: Help Withe Crazy Puppies

I have just 'ended up' with two pups, both bitches, 20 weeks old. We kept one of our litter but have had one returned, so we now have two.

I have never had two pups at once before - I know its not the best scenario but we have do right by our pup. The one that was returned has had very little basic training compared to Lottie who will sit and down at both verbal, hand signals and is beginning to get the whistle - not bad for 20weeks old. The other who we've nicknamed Taz (Tasmanian Devil), doesn't know sit or down, but does walk better on a lead.

Taz has taught Lottie how to escape the puppy pen - so that is no longer useful! We still use the crate though. She also jumps up loads and barks a lot. Lottie was doing so well, but Taz is teaching her some bad habits. We turn away when Taz jumps up and don't speak to her.
I try to allocate some work individually everyday, and also just some separate cuddles. They sleep separately too.

Any other advice on dealing with two at once is most gratefully recieved.

Re: Help Withe Crazy Puppies

I have 3 puppies, so i think im definately off my rocker.
We have a blast. Although it is a bit of a squeeze when all three want to sit on my lap, its all dogs and no me haha
I treat each one differently, as they all have different personalities so train in different ways, hope that makes sense.
I train them separately on rotation everyday which i incorperate walking in with it etc, weekends they all walk together to the fields just for puppy time, ilet them fool around but step in before it esculates any, as i dont want any injuries.
I look back and laugh really as we have had some great fun, at the time i wasnt amused bless them, it can be stressful occassionally but on the whole i wouldnt change a thing....I think.
Dalton is a GSD and 15 months, Kane is a GSD and 13 months and Libby is a BC who is 23 weeks, they like each others company, but also are quite happy just with me
It isnt for the faint hearted though
xx
