Unhappy Biting

I've had a husky mix for about five years now. I got him when he was a little over a year old and he had been abused. He was very skittish at first and every time I'd move my hand above my waist he'd cringe away, but he slowly warmed up to me. He always had issues with big males though. He was always full of energy, but would instantly calm down as soon as a child was around.

Not too long ago he start to bite people, and I don't mean just little nips, I mean, vicious enough to draw blood and need stitches. Particularly when the person was around his food. He'd never been territorial around his food. But due to this I had to put him down.

I guess my question is could, he possibly have developed seizures or some sort of mental problem just like we do that could have caused it? It was just so out of the blue and he was never violent in the past. He wouldn't even go after other animals or tug or shake toys. I have a bird and he could land and him and he wouldn't do a thing.

Hi and Welcome Firstly I do not want to sound rude here BUT
why did you think the only solution was to get your dog PTS?
You are asking a forum if he could have had seizures or mental problems, did you ask a vet?
In what situations were you saying that he bit people, was it only around his food?

Your post has no real insight into your dog apart from he bit and you got him PTS So I find it hard to understand, can you give any more info

Re: Biting

Well the first instance my grandmother was watching him while I was out of town and she said she went to pour him more food while he was eating and he just bit her. It was a pretty bad bite. But she said not to worry about it because she should have known better than to mess with a dog when they were eating.

The next person that he bit was my aunt. She has a lot of land and I go over there to let him run. He was in the back of the truck and she opened the camper shell and reached into pet him and he bit her, slashed her hand really deep. That really freaked my out. I didn't know what to do.

Then one time I let him in from outside and my friend was over. He knew my friend, never had a problem with him and just went at his arm. My friend luckily had a coat on so he didn't get hurt, but the coat was just shredded.

I don't really see a connection between the events or know what could have triggered it. It just seemed completely random. I run a day care out of my home, so my biggest fear became that he would do that to one of the children. I took him to the vet and they couldn't tell me what was causing it. They didn't have the slightest clue. They told me I had two options, to either keep him away from people or put him down. And the first I just couldn't imagine doing. He was a very social and hyper active dog. I couldn't keep him out in the backyard all the time or stop taking him for walks. So I did what I thought was best for him.

The idea that he might have developed mental problems was something I came up with, but my vet sorta scoffed at, which I couldn't believe. I'm working towards a degree in psychology and I've read that dogs can develop many of the same mental problems that humans do. It's just not never well understood. Hopefully that helps clarify it a bit.

Re: Biting

the sad thing here is that you lost your dog and will never know what was wrong with him as its too late to find out. the vet did not seem to give you many options, did he check for brain tumours? what about trying to muzzle him for a while around others? was there any time you wern't with him and so posssibly some one did something to him that caused him to go for people through fear? but all this is pointless now as he's not here to find out or help. it must be a very hard position to be in.
