Re: Advice appreciated regarding a 5 week old pup please.

Well done for giving her a home

With regards to your other dog walking away- never stop her from doing so. She is doing it because she feels uncomfortable and if you forced he to sit and let the puppy approach she could turn.

What I would do is make the puppy a pleasant experience.
Ignore your other dog a little when the puppy is not there, and give more attention when the puppy is about.
Give her treats and reward at first for being in the same room.
Also make sure you do have some one on one time with your dog so she doesn't feel pushed out.

If you can, feed them treats at the same time (providing the akita is not food aggresive) and graduslly bring them closer together and praise so they associate being close with nice things.

Yeah no that didn't help one bit. Oh well...its happened. Don't blame yourself though anyone can make the mistake don't worry though your other dog will catch on that will be a good friend to her. If not, again, i will have Sadie lol

Re: Advice appreciated regarding a 5 week old pup please.

lol Everyone thinks she is adorable and wants to take her home.
What age can you start feeding them treats... it's been a long time since I did it with my akita and we didn't have her until she was about 10 weeks.
For the first couple of days she was on sloppy weetabix then the vet advised me to put her on well soaked puppy food... and she has been on puppy milk since the day I brought her home.

ok when she's reached 8 weeks i would quit the puppy milk our vet told us that when we brought mika home. I don't know about treats as i've never dealt with such a small young puppy but we gave our boys puppy treats since we bought them home at 8/9 weeks old.

If you post this particular question re the feeding and treats in the breeding section i'm sure they will be able to help as they are all breeders - well most of them - who deal with puppies as young as Sadie is. Or just hope some nice breeder on here will notice this post and help you as much as poss.

You're not a nuisance. I've had dogs my entire life and i sometimes feel there's stuff I don't know myself.

Also as kate said, pick up the Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey. Its really good and has so much info in it.

Thumbs up Re: Advice re 5-WO pup// crates, housetraining, sep-anx

hey, wisp! :--)

good on U, well done for taking in this infant!

there is also an excellent free resource on DogStarDaily,
2 free books which can be downloaded as pdf-files or actually printed off at home:
*Before U get Ur Puppy* and *After U Get Ur Puppy*.

they were written by -Ian Dunbar, DVM- who specializes in behavior -
chock-full of helpful stuff, especially how to teach BITE - INHIBITION, which this pup will need,
as she left her dam + sibs far too-young to have learnt an inhibited-bite from her family.

Staffies + their mixes have incredibly powerful cheek, jaw, neck and chest muscles,
all of which sum-up to an incredibly powerful Bite - it is very important that she learn to use her mouth gently.

Q - is the crate a shipping crate, or a wire AKA show-crate?
shipping crates are preferable for all housetraining and as sleeping crates; they are leakproof with a solid bottom,
not a folded sheet-metal tray. they are also warmer; the metal conducts heat from the pups body; the resin kennel will not.

leaving the crate by the bed within arms-reach, putting only the PUP in it - no bedding -
and burping the crate with a flat, firm palm when she fusses will help her learn to sleep alone.

dogs who sleep with a human are more likely to develop sep-anxiety, as the black + white stark contrast
between 6 to 8-hours cuddled in bed together, and the painfully quiet house empty of humans, play up the difference -
human home = cuddles and activity; dog alone = boredom and stress.

when U burp the crate, she will momentarily hush - as that is more vibration than it is sound, she will FEEL it.
praise that moment of silence, soothingly - Good girl, go to sleeeeep...., or Bedtime, or any other quiet cue.
then YOU take a Deep Breath, Roll Over and SIGH deeply, relaxing -
999 of 1,000 pups will immediately do likewise, get up, turn about, lie down, sigh and settle to sleep.

i would set the alarm for 3-AM each night, carry her outside on-leash, set her down, wait, PRAISE, Treat!,
come back, pup to crate, back to bed.
if U lay Ur coat out ahead of time with a treat in the pocket
and have slip-on shoes, the elapsed time is under 10-mins, LOL.

she has no sphincters till 12-WO, before that Where is somewhat her choice, When Tho is NOT her choice -
when she is full, she empties. most pups are dry thru the night by 14 to 15-WO,
and clean and dry daytimes for 8-hours by about 6-MO.

congratulations on the new addition!
