Wont walk

Hi Guys

As some of you know Ive recently got a new little puppy. Hes a Yorkshire terrier, very well behaved apart from one problem. The little bugger just will not walk on a lead. Ive tried dragging him, encouraging him with treats, walking with the lead pulled tight and the collar high on his neck , the lot. Its getting me down as id love to be able to take him for a walk but he just sits his butt down and wont

Any help very much appreciated.

Re: Wont walk

ouch, just stop for a second. He's a tiny puppy everything is new, experiences have to be good and happy.

No doubt other forum member will give you sound advice.

I let puppies get used to a collar then attach a lead, I don't hold it I let them run or what ever they want to do to get used to it then I hold it and do a few steps in the garden and lots of praise and treats.

If you don't have a garden the house will be fine, once he is happy to walk then go outside the gate I only walked about two houses away and back increasing slowly.

Don't drag him, or pull the lead tight, that could make matters worse. Be gentle you could even hold the leash and stand in front of him encouraging him to you. Always praise I give treats too.

Good luck

Sue

Re: Wont walk

Sue done all that. I didnt just put the collar and lead on then expect him to walk. I introduced him to the collar let him get used to that, then attached the lead and let him walk around the house with that on for a couple of hours, this I did over a few days. I even bought a harness as I thought it may be the collar he didnt like. Ive owned Dogs all my life and have never encountered this problem before.

Re: Wont walk

Have you got a friend with a dog who could come and walk with you?

I find that all our pups are great starting out with other dogs first.

Yeah you get the crocodile rolls at first but sit it out and be calm.

We had to carry our pup just down the driveway and to the grass walking area, before she would walk, took a couple of goes on her own but she soon got the hang of it.She would go everytime with another dog,it was just the start of the walks that were a problem at first.

You will have to sit it out or relax and let him be,or try again in a week or so.

Any scary encounter will undo any progress you have done

Good luck and happy walking

Mel

Re: Wont walk

Well done

take a favourite toy to tempt him with.throw it a little way underarm, and it should take his mind off the leaving the safe place (home)

If he stops dont pressure him to walk but let him sit and look, then encourage him to come to you.Lots of praise and he will be trotting along soon enough.

Remember not to get anxious as he will pick up on it.

Happy walking.
