Problems With Male Staffie and New Kittens

Any advice would be appreciated.

Duke as taken too well to the kittens, I hadn't really noticed other than he is really good with them. great! well not really.

Duke will not leave their side, I noticed he was thickening around his abdomen a bit too quick for it to be weight gain. You guessed it he won't leave the kittens not even to relieve himself.

I didn't realise until there was a puddle on the floor. This has happened twice now, and he has pood once. He's being going out and coming straight back in without relieiving himself. I don't punish him, but I am forcing him outside to toilet and I am preventing from coming in until he does something, then loads of praise.

He has been refusing our daily walks, again I thought it was the rain but we have walked for miles in the rain. He will start to pull back as soon as we get to the side gate and does a complete U-turn at the front gate pulling me straight back home.

He just either lays by the crate or oversees them when they are playing in the room.

I want to avoid him becoming possessive. He isn't at the moment he is happy for us all to be around them and lets us handle them, I also stroke Duke at the same time and I encourge hubby to always include Duke, which he does.

Thank you, I assumed they needed to spend as much time as possible to get used to each other.

I will start now and try to get him out for a walk. It isn't raining so I wont feel mean.

Many thanks I really appreciate your help and support.

I took him for a walk had to encourge him forceably After a shortwhile he was back to normal. We weren't out long an hour or so but it really has done him good.

I can't close the room door if the kittens are in the crate as they are now, because Duke is scratching and making noises, not barking and not really crying. I have left the door open and he's laying in front of the settee and he is just starting to relax.

Many thanks

Cheers - I think we are onto a winner.

He seems a lot more relaxed. The kittens had their last romp before bed they had access to the room and stairs and Duke stayed in the room, his choice the door was open.

Tomorrow I will increase our walk time.

Re: Problems With Male Staffie and New Kittens

The longer walk time the longer the break from the kittys, so in a way thats kinda helping wean him away from those cute babys...plus he gets knackered at the same time lol.
good idea

Re: Problems With Male Staffie and New Kittens

Glad you seem to have found a way round your problem, I did see the thread earlier but other than what Eol suggested I couldn't think of anything else. Glad it's working and bless lil Duke, he's such a sweetie. Milo guards our cats if other dogs grumble at them.

I have no advice because I don't have dogs but do think this should win a prize for being the cutest 'problem' I've read on here so far
