Hubby says he's only looking after them cos they not quite a mouthful yet.

Your right they do have a stubborn streak, but that gives them a unique character that we love.

and by heck I love him to bits, he's my little tank.

Re: Problems With Male Staffie and New Kittens

Sulks this morning,

He refused to go out to toilet so I encouraged him forceably, stopped him from returning and kept saying my usual word pee pee, eventually he did and shot back in.

The kittens were in the room I kept Duke with me while I cleaned their crate, usually hubby keeps an eye on all of them while I sort the crate out.

Duke chose to lay in his bed - he had a proper pod on. He's okay now the kittens and Duke are together.

I'll take him out for a walk soon, just having a bacon butty (no butter!) and a coffee.

We'll get there.

Sue

Sorry Sue - Missed this thread but good advice has been given.

Don't they sulk and that damn stubborn streak they have - well

Sounds like your getting there though

That Bacon butty sounds nice!

Thank you, we are getting there. Just have to keep reminding him where to toilet and walks are fun.

In all honesty I could have understood aggression through jealousy, because Staffies themselves demand a lot of attention. I could have understood a female dog mothering young animals even if they are not of the same species.

It was the last thing we thought of that he was fathering them so to speak. We were just pleased he took to them.

I was singing his praises, still am though, okay I had to clean his mess up but on the whole things have worked out really well.

I agree. He sounds adorable

But at least you're problem isn't that he wont accept the kittens!

That's true, he really does look after them. He checks where they both are sniffs and licks them, always checks out their food, when I'm not watching little git. He allows them to play all over him, he even lets them share his jumbo chew while he is eating it. I do stop them and move them, so unfortunately I don't have any photos.

He isn't quite as watchful over them now he will allow a bit of time for himself especially to relieve himself and his walks.

I was concerned initially that Duke was becoming too protective of them and that he was going to make himself ill.

I am pleased with how things have turned out with the advice I was given things have worked out nicely.

Sounds like he's living up to the staffies reputation of been a "nanny dog"

I'm pleased things are working out for you Sue

I'll be honest I didn't understand the "nanny dog" written about the Staffies because of their character and flare for life, every he does is full on, top speed. His whole persona changes around the kittens.

He just lays down and lets them play if they get a bit cheeky he washes their faces and I encourage them to move away.

I never expected an outcome as good as this and we haven't had any accidents in the house since the first week.

I have heard of dogs accepting kittens as their own but I assumed they were bitches. Duke really has assumed his role as dad, I thought his interest would have subsided - it may do but it hasn't happened yet.
