dog wont go near our cars
Hi, I am new to this forum and also a new dog owner.
I adopted a 4 year old border collie cross and picked him up a week ago. He has been perfect in every way, he is obedient and well behaved. He travels well in cars etc. I have 2 options when i take him for a walk. Turn right out of gate to go to local park which is 2mins walk away and he loves it there. Other option is to turn left out of gate where my car is parked and take him to the common in the car which he also loved going to as we play frisbee there, and lots of space to run around. Now for the last few days he doesn't seem to want to go left out of the gate. As soon as i turn left with him on the lead he lies down and looks very scared. If i try to pull him he pulls backwards and the only way I could get him to my car was to pick him up and carry him. I do not know of anything that could have caused him to not want to go left out of the gate as he did for the first 4days with no problem. The only thing i can think is that he doesn't like going in the car. But when in the car he travels very well. I am going to give him a break from going in the car and just walk him to the local park which means turning right out of gate. But there will be times that i will need to take him left and any advice on helping him overcome this issue would be much appreciated please. Also if you feel that i shouldn't give him a break from trying to go left out of gate please let me know, all advice/comments will be welcomed. Thanks |

Re: dog wont go near our cars
think it will be a slowly slowly thing. or you coud do the the other way
also i would do was just go out the gate and just walk take no notice of what his doing just go even if he lays down i would carry on, and walk straight pass the cars. i had a dog stay once that stopped walking after a curtain distance it just sat there, so i just carried on it soon learnt he wasnt going to get away with it, the owners used to stop and walk it back home so it got its own way, he might be trying that with you

Re: dog wont go near our cars
Carol,
When you say just carry on ignoring what he's doing do you also mean to drag him along on the lead? Think I'll try the softly softly approach first but failing that may need to try the above. |
