Tala's eating habits leaving something to be desired!!
Hi everyone
Tala is a 15 month GSDxHusky, and will seriously eat anything...... apart from her food. She will eat cat poo (even sniffs the cats bum when they come in and asks to go out if she thinks they have pooped!) cow pats, any human food she might find (which isnt much - but this has included banana skins and rotten pears, which I got back from her after coaxing). I am worried about what she might find in the back garden when she does out in the dark for toilet, as she ate a slug the other day, and threw up at 3am. Our neighbour has a pond, and I have been frogs in the past. She'll able through her 'proper' food, unless a cat is watching, in which case its a RACE AGAINST TIME!! I am feeding her JWB lamb kibble. And I know she will eat it as she will when the cats are watching. I dont really understand why she'll break thru boundaries to get at poo, but cant be assed to eat her food?? She also has started not wanted to come back in from the garden when she is called, maybe there is more POO to find!! I cant really clear it up as quickly as she finds it because I get home from work and its pitch black, besides the cats can go in and out all evening, and I dont know when they poop! She's testing my patience !! We are trying to get her to gain weight too, as she was underweight in the kennels, so any advice would be good. p.s if we mix a bit of tinned food in, she'll sniff all that out, and leave the rest for ages!! Thanks Julie |

Re: Tala's eating habits leaving something to be desired!!
Hmmm... I was thinking about the lead in the garden, because its so gross!!
I have just been to Pets @ home for some frontline for her and the cats... £50 later...... I also looked around the dog food section, and I have bought some PAH beef complete, gravy coated..... it was £8.99 for 2.5kg, so about the same cost as JWB, will give it a go, mixed in with JWB to start with. She doesnt 'dislike' JWB as she'll race it down if Tigger is around..... but if he's not there, forget it! Thanks for the advice J |

Re: Tala's eating habits leaving something to be desired!!
She sounds just like my Gemma!!! She thinks poo from a bottom other than her own is the best thing since sliced bread. She will scrapple for cat and fox poo and rabbit pellets are to die for. My other dog isnt too obsessed but he copies her. They also both love cow and horse poo.
There has been some research that it could be a lack of enzymes or vits in the dog but my two get fed very well as I'm sure your's does too so it cant be that, I think they just simply really like the taste. Cat poo obviously has cat food in it so she will like this. The wild poo is just vegetation BUT be aware of gestational worms - lung worms can come from slugs and snails and fox poo, tape and round worm is rife in fox and rabbit poo. Make sure you use a womer that covers all.. I was just using drontal but I now back up with advocate spot on as this covers lung worm. I dare not take the risk with my two scavengers on the walks in the woods. As for food.. she sounds like a typical fussy eater. I have had it all with my two. They hate kibble, will nibble it if they absolutely have to (never starve but near enough) so I have changed to canned with a foldhill terier meal and veg. They wolf it down every time, if they dont for whatever reason.. I take it up and they get it warmed up at the next meal time with extra veg! As for the ignoring in the garden and wanting to be outside all the time.... my gemma did this.... I found that she was digging!!!!!! check all your garden edges, also she may be burrowing things... my gemma is terrible for this. i will give her a dentistix and she will waste it and go burrow it in the middle of the lawn only for mum to find it three days later all soggy. dont worry too much. she is acting up but be firm with her with the ignoring, dont let her out when she asks, try and determine what is a toilet call and a just wanna go out call. food - be firm! stick with ONE food. give it a chance. two weeks maybe.. if she doesnt touch it, then maybe you should try something else. the poo and slugs - as i said - use a good wormer and just ignore it there isnt anything you can do about this. Also be carefull when mixing foods. complete food is meant to be fed alone and not mixed with wet.. these are two complete foods. if you wanna give wet food mix with a proper mixer (foldhill is good its just wholewheat) and veg if you wanna not a complete dry food as the protein levels which shoot through the roof. good luck. |
