How to teach bowel control

I think Murphy can hold his wee as I have been out for about 5 hours before and come home to no accidents and if I'm able to get Murphy to poo before I go to bed at night there is nothing in the morning , but it's very rare that he will poo on his evening tolilet trip so every morning I have wee and poo to clean up ( I think the act of pooing makes him wee too ) . I have tried feeding earlier and feeding later but nothing seems to make a difference and he still goes overnight. Does bowel control take longer to come ?

I say "do a wee" but he has no command for pooing. I could try a poo command but I think it would take alot longer to teach as he tends to only go once in the day at any random time and then again overnight.

Re: How to teach bowel control

That could be the issue, you have taught him to go wee, but not poo if this makes sense.
All mine go on command, they hold it until i say so, but take them out at regular intervals.
If you are around when he poo's teach him the poo command, then he will get the gist of things with both.
Maybe use a gerneral term for both, I let each one out and say "get busy". Before bed i Say come one get busy, they do a wee, then i say get busy and they will do a poo.
Hope this makes sense, I think you have given good boundries with the wee command, but he is all over the place with his poo's because you havent given any guidelines chick.
Hope my waffle makes sense hun

Yes they makes sense .I always thought that because he is fed barf and it produces less poo that it would be impossible to teach a poo command as he doesn't go often enough to reinforce the command throughout the day, but I will try introducing a word when he is pooing and see if that works.

Re: How to teach bowel control

Its worth a shot hun, My OH laughs and say he can set his watch by mine pooping haha.
Just be conisistent and everytime he poo's give him a nice tasty treat and lots of praise, he will come good honestly, afterall he has learn bladder control, and he is still a baby at 20 weeks.
My collie is 20 weeks, I say "get busy", then i say, "do you need to get busy again", my neighbours must think im nuts haha

Dougal is on a distinguished road
Re: How to teach bowel control

Dougal is 17 weeks old - he nearly always does a last thing at night poo- but it can take a 30 minute walk for him to do so. Just letting him outside doesn't work.

The good thing is that even when he doesn't go last thing -he waits until the next morning -which is all well and good now he sleeps on my bed!!
