Hi all,

We have a female 13 year old cross between an Alsation and Collie.

The problem is when my Mum or Dad leave the house for any reason the dog barks uncontrollably (even if she is not being left alone because others are still home). When me or one of my brothers leave the house, the dog doesn't bark at all. In the past we have basically been told that it's the dogs nature because of her being more of an alsation than collie.

I realise it will be difficult or impossible to train her because of her age, I just thought I'd see if anyone has any advice.

Hi sketch, many thanks for your superfast reply.

It's not a recent thing, she has always done this and nothing has changed at home. Her hearing appears to be deteriorating a bit - she used to always bark when someone knocked at the door but now she doesn't seem to hear the knock. I know she's not completely deaf though because she still responds to calls.

It seems like the barking is becoming louder as a result.

Also, as soon as my Mum or Dad are out of the door, the dog stops barking and resumes normal behaviour.

oooh tricky one, because the behaviour has been going on for a long time.
Does your dog know the quiet command ?
If so try using it when your parents are leaving, just before she starts,
If you dont know the quiet command, i woould teach it.
You will need something very tasty and of high value because barking is pretty gratifying for a dog.
When she is just being quiet, get her attension and say "quiet" or shhhh whatever is best for you.
when she is quiet for a few second say the key word, and then "good quiet" and treat, do this reguarly and cross finger she will learn the word and reacy accordingly.
when she knows the command as your parents are leaving say it before she starts, treat and praise.
