Stopping on a walk and refusing to move

Hi

Whats all this about? For the last 2 nights Tala has stopped dead in her tracks in a similar part of our walk. She actually sat down yesterday and wouldnt budge for about 5 mins! I just ignored her, but in the end I had to pull her to get her going - I say pull - almost drag!!

Tonight the same thing happened, she just stopped and stood there looking at me like I aint moving. She was trying to pull in the opposite direction I let her for a bit then thought, screw this, I'm in charge!

I dont get it?? Nothing has happened in that area before.

I'm wondering if she thinks, ah she cant pull me cos my collar will come off..... even though it wont? She does yank in the opposite direction.

Any ideas how to handle it?

Thanks

Julie

Re: Stopping on a walk and refusing to move

hi all.
couldnt help notice this thread, my gsd does the same from time to time.
i know my dog very well, as we spend almost all of our time together.

in my case, i see my dog as being just plain stubborn, because he isnt getting his own way, and knows it is me doing the leading.

i dont let him get away with it and bribe him with treats etc, i simply just continue to walk on (without sudden jerking of the lead) after firstly checking he isnt spending a penny, lol

i see it as a dog trying in his own way to get one on me, as a challenge to be at the top of the pecking order.

by now allowing him to get his own way, is a reminder to him that he aint in charge !

Re: Stopping on a walk and refusing to move

ps.
for got to mention,
for those of you who are bribing your dog with treats to get him to walk with you, he will learn to stop and sit on a walk everytime he want a treat from you.

by giving him treats to encourage him to walk with you, is as all dogs are, crafty was of training his owner to give him a treat when he wants one !!

how old is she? elderly dogs do get night blind so this may have reason? Have you tried changing your route too, if she knows where shes going all the time its not much of an adventure

Re: Stopping on a walk and refusing to move

Mine does it when we're approaching one of his tie-up spots by the local shops. He sits a good few metres away and refuses to budge. I wish I could trust him off leash but he's a very fast sprinter and the shops are on a busy roundabout. I just have to gently pull with increasing force and eventually he gives up the fight and accepts his fate. He's only ever left there for a couple of minutes at a time... He's gradually learning he can't get his own way.

He also does it outside the back door. I've had to use a flexileash while out there now as he figured out that other people's gardens are much more interesting and the walls and fences aren't as high as they look from down there. The same technique applies, he does it.

He does it about 50% of the time although I'm noticing less resistance.

Treats are not an option with mine I'm afraid, he's not particularly food driven outside, inside he's great and very enthusiastic.

I think you are right, Tala is a 15 month old Shepherd x Husky, and although she looks husky like, her traits are that of a GSD, so I think she has their intelligence!!

She just wants to go where she wants to go, and yes, I agree that giving her treats to walk is not a good idea, because she is clever, she'll just expect them, and stop as a pastime!!

I'll keep persisting, and she'll soon realise that this is how it is! I let her sniff things, but thats the only time i'll let her dictate where she goes :-)

Re: Stopping on a walk and refusing to move

Again this morning she stopped in the same place!! and was biting her flexi lead when I tried to get her to move

I'm a bit concerned that she'll quickly bite thru it one day!!

I had to almost drag her to get going. when eventaully she did get going, I praised her...... but I cant be having this all the time, especially in the morning when I have to get home to get ready for work.

Help!! LOL

Re: Stopping on a walk and refusing to move

My puppy went through a phase of doing this. Lucky for me she is only 5kg, so I picked her up, relocated her and we moved on happily! NOw we are fine. No picking up needed, and she walks really nicely on and off lead too. I do use treats, but only for recall.
