Tala got out of her collar!! and ran home!!

Hi all

Our 15 month HuskyxGSD decided yesterday night that after she'd done her poop and wee, it was time to go back home, so she turned and yanked away from me, and shock horror, her collar came off! Luckily there was no cars about as it was abour 11pm (and we live on the edge of a quiet market town) and she trotted off home, only about 150 metres!

In the day the collar had gotten wet, as she had a bath after rolling in something vile!!

We have now made another hole, so it cant come off...... at least it doesnt feel as though it could, but she clearly remembered last nights escape, as thing morning on walkies, she tried yanking in the opposite directtion, as if it say, this flippin worked yesterday!!

I'm wondering if a harness is the answer? she's pretty rubbish at walking on the lead, she pulls a fair bit. So any advice would be good.

Thanks

Julie and the escaping Tala!!

p.s attached is escapee and my daughter!

Re: Tala got out of her collar!! and ran home!!

What about using a half-choke? If she tried to pull out of thet it would tighten but when she walks nice it is slack.
Most dogs can walk backwards out of a harness too.

Also the good thing about half chokes is that because they are loose they don't ''ruin'' the fur around the dogs neck.

Cute picture and that is one funky dressing gown!!

Hmmmm, a half choke, I think I saw an American Akita with one of those one, is it like a leather collar with a chain bit on the top where the lead connects?

I dont think she likes being on the lead one bit, she is a different dog when shes allowed to roam...... but that doesnt happen very often unless its very enclosed, and also we've had to wash her face/neck 3 times this weekend from rolling in POOP she is now known as 'Tala Ming Mong'

Ha ha, I'll tell Zoe you like her dressing gown ;-)

Re: Tala got out of her collar!!

If you can't tighten up the collar enough to stop it slipping, then a martingale could be a good idea.

It's all made of fabric so no chain, and you only need to tighten it so it's tight on the dog when fully closed to not slip, it shouldn't have a choking effect.

With your type of dog I wouldn't suggest a normal harness as they'll use it to their advantage! "PULL"

If you want loose lead walking and are prepared to put in the training then a halti harness is kind and effective until you get there.

My friend uses a wainrights flat leather collar from PAH on his husky and it works fine, no slippage.

Re: Tala got out of her collar!!

Harnesses are harder to get out of if they fit properly, and some people have a lead attached to both harness and collar. This should be impossible to break out of!
One day my dog's collar broke in town at night when she pulled hard to escape from an off-lead staffy that had decided to attack her as we walked down a narrow alley. Thank god it did and she could run away, if it hadn't she would have been mauled.

The Martingale one sounds like a good one...... will that still work if she is pulling away from me but facing me, so she's trying to get loose?

any advice on poo rolling

Re: Tala got out of her collar!!

Oh yes, I forgot they are called martingales too. It's a half hoke without chain. Works exactly the same way.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned these yet but have you thought of a Martingale?

They come in pretty colours/patterns too
