Re: Tala got out of her collar!!

Many of the specific headcollars are easily detached should the dog so desire, which one were you using? It was recommended to me many years ago to attach a double ended lead to both the head collar and a standard collar to avoid such instances.

Re: Tala got out of her collar!!

be REALLY careful with a harness, i didnt think kira could get out of hers, tied her up for 2 minutes and she slipped it and went running down a very busy main road i was terrified, luckily she stopped to see a dog at the end of the street but its suprising how few people will help you in that situation

i use a half check on kira as when fitted properly the dog cant slip it and it also stops her from pulling

I thought this too as Roo could get out of a halti and gentle leader no probs, but the canny collar fits snuggly just below the ears and is very hard to get off, he has never succeeded but I do loop a line through a half check just in case anyway, but I've never needed it, did with the halti though

Re: Tala got out of her collar!!

Half chains are useless if you have a dog that is determined to get free. My dog quickly learned to pull forward it tightens to pull back it loosens. He pulled free on a busy main road. As awful as this sounds I grabbed his scruff, sorted it out and walked back home very shakey.

He can also escape from his harness but I'm one up on him now I don't allow him to pull backwards. I pull him from the side not straight as he ducks his head and literally walk out.

I prefer a harness because of his breed a SBT, I was worried he would choke himself on a collar, whereas if he pulls on a harness he is pulling against his chest. He is trained to walk to heel, I'm referring to when we started out.

I really think its personal choice and preference. I have heard halti's are good but I haven't used one.

When used coreectly, it does not matter what direction the dog pulls in, the collar should tighten.

Re: Tala got out of her collar!!

with a half check the way the collar sits normally (as in the house) is as the same tightness as a normal collar would be when walking (2 fingers), so when the dog pulls in either direction it shouldnt be able to get out. Kira was determined to escape her collar at one point, gave up on the half check cuz she couldnt get out.

it all depends on wether you have it fitted correctly

Re: Tala got out of her collar!!

Thanks they are lovely

My pair need a new one unfortunately Dave has to have a plain black one as I need one with a clip- his head is too wide for it to fit on and off easily and any looser the 'choke' would not do anything!

Re: martingales one-piece + with buckle: Mrs Bones

hey, y'all! :--)

i fit martingales and Gentle Leaders in the same way - high, flat + snug, with * no * slack -
IOW, the martingale-loop where the leash would clip on, lies FLAT on the dogs neck, and Zero Fingers fit between the dogs neck + the collar.
both martingales + GLs go as high on the neck, and as close to the ears,
as is physically possible; then i adjust them so that they will STAY up there, not slither down the dogs neck toward the chest.

Mrs Bones is not too far from me - GORGEOUS collars, leashes, etc:
dog news dog collars dog information

i do not get a dime, or anything else - i use em, i like em, i recommend em.
the hardware is solid BRASS, made by the same firm that supplies Coach bags, with not one weld, bend or gap; sandcast, one chunk.
nothing to rust, bend open, pinch, cut fabric, slide off, Nada!

they are not cheap - they went up another $3 since the last time i bought one - BUT... they are WARRANTEED for life, if the dog eats it, send the pieces back, get a replacement.
and did i mention *gorgeous*?, LOL...
besides custom sizing and 4 widths!

take a peek, they are so cool; cheers,
--- terry

Re: Tala got out of her collar!!

I agree half chokes are the way to go and perhaps a head collar until she is walking nice

I see you have flea collars on her (in the pic) I wouldn't bother with them as they do bugger all x
