i have a dog called mack, he's extremely dominent and he thinks he's dominent of our pack. which im sure you can guess causes problems. he barks ALL THE TIME and follows us round (obv checking that his "babies" are ok) now i just wanted to know how i can get him out of this mind set.

i know a little bit of what ishould be doing but not a huge lot, i never let him in the house until i tell him to, i always go through the doors first, i make him sit and stay for his dinner and i eat before him.

some advice would be nice.

oh, and he's like this because he was my nanna's dog and didnt have any training (he's slightly better than he used to be)
is he a rescue?
have you tried to make him stay in a room when you're walking around, or a create this way you can do what ever you want and not have to worry that he might get in the way. This behaviour doesn't sound like a dominate behaviour if he's a rescue he might fear being left again, or possibly he's just a nosy dog and wants to know what you're doing. hope you resolve his issues soon, best of luck

Winterwood is on a distinguished road
Re: just a post about a very dominent dog

The pack theory can in many cases be an effective way of setting a foundation for living with dogs. It is however not the be all and end all, as there are many other avenues you can go down. Positively reinforcing wanted behaviour has proved succesful. Some therapies such as the Bowen technique can also be good used in conjunction with general good handling. There are some good little books by a lady called Turid Rugaas on various dog handling issues, these are titled 'My Dog Pulls, What Do I Do' , 'Barking (the sound of a language), 'On Talking Terms With Dogs'.

There is a good association called INTOdogs (intuitive natural training for owners and dogs) that have a list of people around the country who can come out and visit you. They are also reasonably priced

Re: just a post about a very dominent dog

He is a rescue but i think it's more that my nanna didn't have a clue how to train a dog which is the reason he is like he is. I don't have to handle him for him to bite, occasionally i'll walk over and tell him to get out of something (like if he's bothering the rabbit) and he will snap and yap at me.

He is better than he was so i know some of the techniques i'v used have worked but he isn't improving anymore, like he's stuck where he is. I will look at getting a dog behaviourist in because my parents won't listen to me and refuse to use any techniques.

He listens to me more than my parents and thats a worry. He's snapped at and bitten my mam and dad before too. If i convince them to get a bahavourist then maybe they will listen to how they need to be around him more.
I have tried to make him stay in a certain place, i.e his bed while i walk around but as soon as i turn my back he sneaks out lol. He's quite crafty actually. He needs to be told several times before he does something, even something as simple as sit, and i know his hearing is perfectly ok. I ALWAYS praise him when he does something good.

The reason i asked for some tips is because i don't really want to have to pay for a behavourist and i prefer to do training myself but i'm stuck because i know WHY he does things but not how to stop all of the things.

Is the dog insured??? Your insurance may cover the cost of a behaviourist

Gosh now it seems to become a war between who is the human leader, between le loup and Jackson. I am only joking but I think le loup only tries (even if he/she knows already a lot obviously about canine and that dogs behaviour interest this person) to get more informations about his/her problematic dog. But like said jackson maybe a forum is not the answer and going to a good behaviour (right to a behaviour, all of them will say they are good ) specialist is more an appropriate answer. Good luck to you !

just athought. could it be that your parents don't treat your dog the same way as you? i only ask because if evryone in the house is telling him different, then he might be confused.i would like to add ( for what its worth)
i had a GS i got him at 13 months old, and the ONLY fault he had was, once i'd put his food down there was no way i could take the bowl away from him.
as for the barking my GS would bark to let us know when ANYONE came near the house. But i never interpreted it as him being boss, neither did he. he was a mummies boy.
