Re: Letting puppy of the lead

We dont have anywhere where we can let him off safely to start off with, there is a big park but it has a busy main road on side of it where he could quite easily run into. arghhhh its so worrying incase he runs off and we cant find him!

Re: Letting puppy of the lead

How is he at puppy classes? If you can get a reliable recall with that level of distraction then you shouldn't have much to worry about.

Re: Letting puppy of the lead

My puppies have always been off lead from the day they come to me. A young pup will not run off and it gets in the habit of coming back at that age then it should always do so.
I say SHOULD because my current pup (8months) gradually got more and more unreliable until now I cant even have her off the lead at all as she does an instant runner. Actually I was very pleased yesterday as she managed to escape and she did come to me so maybe we are getting over it. I have her on a flexi lead when out and have a dog proof large garden and horses yard so she can run loose a lot of t he time safely where she always has a perfect recall.

Re: Letting puppy of the lead

Im not brave enuf to let Heidi off lead yet. She is still barely a mouthful to a big dog I want her to get to 4Ibs (and be microchipped) before she gets free reign. Hopefully she will get to at least 4Ibs!
For now she walks on a flexi lead, gets called back often for praise and treats though.

Re: Letting puppy of the lead

dear nat1979

can you have my dog for a week and train him too lol

i made the mistake of not letting him off when he was younger he is now 7 months and a small nightmare off the lead he will come when he feels like it but also surprises you a couple of times and comes back.

i think its me too i lose my confidence when he is off lead and think that reflects in my voice and i think thats one of the reasons he doesnt come all the time he is called
