Re: How long do i wait
I agree, you will quickly learn when they need to go after play/sleep/eating etc so stand outside with them till u know they have been. If they know they go out often and are not allowed back it till they have been it helps u and the pup to understand the routine

Re: How long do i wait
Hi Guys
well i took your advice and let the others back in when they have been ,but bob will still not go and will just sit there looking at the door and i can now be out there for up to 2 hrs now and of course by then the others need to go again so out there even longer. Plus i feel sorry for my other dogs as they are getting no attention off of me when i am out in the garden with just bob and quiet often winston (dad) wants to come back out with me because he is my little shadow. I have played with him to encorage him to go ,i have ignored him,i have even showed him the treat. But he will just not go,well tell a lie twice he has been in the last week and i have gave him so much praise and the treat ,but he still does not work it out. I have now ordered some toilet training spray to see if that will work for him. The other 2 puppies are doing really well ,i take them out and say go wee wee and with in a very short time they are going. |

Re: How long do i wait
In Ian Dunabrs book 'Before and After You Get Your Puppy' he talks about 'errorless house training' where you use both short and long term confinement to aid house training. Short term confinement is using a crate, long term confinement is using a puppy pen, with the crate inside and a toilet area (he suggests using turf or grass).
The idea is, you keep the puppy near you, but in short term confinement when you're around. Every hour you take them out to toilet, praise them when they go, and any play times are immediately after they pup has ben outside to toilet, then the pup goes back in the crate again. Obviously it works best for younger pups who sleep most of the time they are not eating or playing! You would use the long term confinement if you need to go out and leave your puppy, or overnight. It also enables 'errorless' chew toy training, as the only things the puppy has access to chew he is supposed to chew, so he learns to chew the correct things. Having said all that, it is quite regimented, and personally, not for me. I personally wouldn't wait outside with a pup for an hour. I go back inside after 15-20 minutes and keeep a very good eye on them, trying them again 20 mins or so later. Have you considered he might be holding on as he likes going in the garden, and weeing or pooing means he has to come back in? Most people take their pups back in right away once they have been, so pup thinks wee=go back indoors/play is over. Once you do catch him going, (and I'd be inclined ot ignore him until he does go) give him a treat, and then play a game with him for 5 mins before taking him in, so he learns wee= game playing. |

Re: How long do i wait
Hi Jackson
I totally agree sounds quite regimented and like yourself its not for me. Hi ajshep1984 Yes i have tried the pads and the spray and they did`nt work ,well for bob anyway lady used them alright lol but she has no problem going outside anyway But sunday he finally went pee and poo in the garden when he woke up and my self and daughter kept a close eye on him in the house and would take him out every hr for 15 mins ,6 hrs later he went toilet again and yes in the garden and since then he has been doing really well. He does not seem to want or need to go as much as his brother and sister and like i say can go several hrs ,is this normal for a 17 week old pup? Also one more question while i am here ,my hubby took lady out to the garden for her morning business upon waking today and she did`nt go for him ,he came in after 10 mins and so i went straight out to her and said lady go wee wee and she did go wee and poo straight away ,hubby said that she has become dependent on me being there with her when she go`s can that happen. I always stayed out side with jubilee and winston when they where learning and now they have no problem going without me being there. |
