I think thats been some of the problem, you get focused on the bad things and take it for granted that this is how millie is,you think you can't change her cos she's too old and set in her ways and had problems before we got her...........but after taking her to the vet and having a good chat with the behaviourist...we are alot more positive. We wouldn't have rehomed her as that would have been to stressfull for her,and we couldn't have had her PTS either!

Millie is a very loving dog but wants attention constantly, she follows me EVERYWHERE!,but again after talking with the behaviourist she gave me some advice about that too. The vet recommended a D.A.P plug in thingy to help make her feel calmer and i'm going to try a stuffed kong to keep her occupied when she is left.

Again thanks for the advice,i have taken it onboard and hopefully with the help from the behaviourist too we can sort things out!

Glad to hear, you have spoken to a behaviourist and that she will be staying with you
She sounds like a bit of a stressed out girly
I think the behaviourist's suggestion of a DAP plug in was a good one.

Another few things that might be worth trying if you have no luck with the DAP are:
Rescue remedy (you can get a pets version which you just add to the dog's water.
Zylkene- more info. here= Zylkene
Anxiety- homeopathic remedy = Anxiety 15ml
Kalm Aid- Kalm Aid
Scullcap & Valerian - Scullcap & Valerian - Dorwest Herbs
Serene-um- Serene-um
CSJ Calm Down (added to food) Calm Down! - CSJ Herbs for Dogs - CSJK9 Ltd.

Might be worth discussing with your vet/behaviourist?

Diet might also be something to look into? What do you feed her on?
Also how long for/ often is she walked?

Hope this helps

It was only a few suggestions as we have yet to have a proper appointment with her. As well as trying the D.A.P plug in,she said 10 mins prior to leaving her ignore her and don't make a big deal when leaving her, don't let her follow me everywhere around the house and basicly to ignore the bad/attention seeking behaviour and reward the good behaviour.

She has the dry complete dog food mixed with some webbox chub.

She is walked every day for about 30 mins,we have fields behind our house so she can run off the lead.

The vet did mention that there was other things he could give her to help calm her down, but we'll see how the DAP goes for now.

Re: Help!

Hi

Good for you, for taking a step towards helping your dog and realising that it is up to you to sort this out and doing so. It is far easier to pass the problem onto someone else, especially with an elderly dog.

Don't let the opportunity with the behaviourist go, follow it through and life will become easier. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks, so to speak, it just takes a little longer!!!

There is a good book by Jan Fennel, called the Dog Listener, that will help you understand why your dog is behaving in the way that she does, find it in your library, it will help in the meantime and give you hope!!
