Re: Help!

things like sit, leave, away, down are easily said and will be able to give control not least give the dog direction on what behaviour is appropriate - which is what it needs first - the hands of someone experienced with spaniels.
Or as other have said - rehoming it will just pass and probably escalate the issues to another unsuspecting family

yep i agree ,
but i also think they would be better working with a trainer as against sending the dog away.

Re: Help!

I think that it's very important for the owner to be part of the training. When I took my dog for training when he was a puppy He would listen to the trainer more, he had more respect for the trainer than me. He would also soon learn to only listen at the dog school so we started to have lessons inthe park and other train him at different places. The owner needs to learn how to control the dog without confusing it or giving him / her missleading messages. I like the idea of no punisments or even raised voice if that's what's obviously frightening her. Reward the good things, ignore the bad things. Make her feel good about herself and show her what makes you happy. After all she's doing what she's doing because she's frustrated. Dogs don't want to make you unhappy. They just want to please you so show her how Making your husband the only person feeding her for about 2 weeks should also boost their relationship. He should also try hand feeding her. That should help their relationship a lot. I will also recommend following books by an excellent author Stanley Coren: How To Speak Dog and How Dogs Think. These are excellent books and will give you inside on dogs mind

Exactly, anyone can change a dog, especially if it is out of its usual environment, but giving it back to the owner, doesn't mean you give them the key to understanding it and continuing that work.

And don't forget, we are talking about an elderly dog here too.

The best place to sort these things out are in the home it is in. It may be worth speaking to the Rescue you got the dog from, although unless they are exceptional and have someone who could take the dog, they will want to try and avoid it coming back in to them. Maybe they have someone who can give advice.

Re: Help!

At this sort of age I would PTS. It is unfair to put her in rescue and she is obviously disturbed anyway.

Unless a behaviourist can sort it out, then that is what I would do.

Re: Help!

Thank you for opinions and advice.

When i posted i was in a bit of a state and i just concentrated on the bad things about Millie. I think thats been some of the problem, you get focused on the bad things and take it for granted that this is how millie is,you think you can't change her cos she's too old and set in her ways and had problems before we got her...........but after taking her to the vet and having a good chat with the behaviourist...we are alot more positive. We wouldn't have rehomed her as that would have been to stressfull for her,and we couldn't have had her PTS either!

Millie is a very loving dog but wants attention constantly, she follows me EVERYWHERE!,but again after talking with the behaviourist she gave me some advice about that too. The vet recommended a D.A.P plug in thingy to help make her feel calmer and i'm going to try a stuffed kong to keep her occupied when she is left.

Again thanks for the advice,i have taken it onboard and hopefully with the help from the behaviourist too we can sort things out!

Re: Help!

So glad things are looking more positive for you, I can also recommend a stuffed Kong as it keeps our dog amused for hours, although I'd recommend moving anything breakable as they have an unpredictable bounce & our dog will just drop it for the fun of seeing where it's going to go
