Doing a number 2 in her bed! Help!

Help!

I have recently adopted a deaf Lurcher of 18 months. She used to be kept outside 24/7 but I am now trying to crate train her to be inside. She is perfect at going for a wee in the garden but she refuses to go for a number 2. I have sat and waited for 30 minutes trying to encourage her to go for a poo but she just stands there and looks at me like in stupid! lol

I walk her before she goes to bed, which she does go for a poo on the walk, but when I come down after only 4 hours of sleep she has gone AGAIN! Her crate is big enough for her to move around in and I have set aside a place with newspaper for her to go but she insists on going right in the middle of her bed and then sleeps on it!

Can anyone help please?

take away the newspaper as this is only encouraging her to go to toilet in the crate! Make sure the whole crate floor is covered with her bedding so she only sees it as her sleeping and relaxing area and nothing else...

I find mine will go for number 2 in the garden if make them run about first, i dont know if that speeds up their digestion or something but it seems to help And if she does it reward her really well so she basicly learns that going outside is good and doing it inside is worthless ... it will take time but dont give up

Re: Doing a number 2 in her bed! Help!

Try getting up every hour in the night to take her out, you may only need to do this on one night, note down the time that she WILL have a poo, then get up at that time to take her out. once you have caught the time, you can start extending it, getting to her 5 mins later each night. Teaching her to hold herself.

Or you could try her without the crate? Put newspaper down well away from her bed at night. This may help her differentiate from the two.

If all you do doesn't seem to work then I will advise seeing a behaviourist.

Hope I have helped??

i dont think putting down newspaper inside for an adult dog is a good idea as this is only teaching the dog to do the toilet inside the house....

then the OP would have the problem of retraining from toileting inside to outside ... double work and very confusing for the dog!

I think her problem is that the dog is confused between bed and toilet, this is very common with dogs that have either lived outside in bad conditions or been taken from mum too early. I suggested the newspaper thing so that she could teach the dog to differenciate from the two. If the dog has been an outside dog, they have not learnt to hold themselves like a normal fully grown adult, they are used to going where and when they want, and being adult it is more ingrained and harder to train them out of it, so no matter what she does it will be "double the work" The main thing is that she needs to teach the dog that toilet and bed are not the same. Then she can work on proper house training procedures. I had exactly the same problem with Tilly, and she was 10 months when I got her, so younger.

my dogs were toileting in their bed too... dogs do it for different reasons but i still wouldnt advice to teach the dog to do it inside as it is VERY confusing for the dog as it is, rather than teaching one thing and then suddenly changing it to teach another after a time.... but its up to the OP what they think its the better way of doing it

She doesn't go toilet on the newspaper though, she goes on her fleece bed? Thats what I dont understand is that she only seems to poop in her bed, most dogs refuse to go actually in their beds.

Re: Doing a number 2 in her bed! Help!

Thank you for the advise. I will try both options and see which one works for her.

are u using the same bedding?

Washing it with bio washing powder helps to eliminate the previous smell, she obviously associates the bedding with toileting so maybe if that doesnt work replace it with something else....

U would really have to take her out as often as possible in the hope she will do a poo and reward, reward, reward .....

im sure u get it sorted
