Re: Shock Collars debate

Thanks for posting,
I agree with all the comments made and you can see clearly they inflict pain and discomfort.
It's time for an outright ban of these cruel devices.

Re: Shock Collars debate

They try them on people, all of them said it hurts and it was on the lowest setting,so imagine them on a high setting
One actually lives on a farm with dogs & Livestock,So needing well trained dogs, she said there are other methods to use when training dogs.

Re: Shock Collars debate

Could you imagine the outrage if they were used on kids!!!
That wouldn't be allowed so why should it be acceptable to train a dog this way, i say Ban them!!!

Re: Shock Collars debate

I agree, they should be banned - animals deserve to be treat with respect and while I passionately believe that dogs should be trained and obey commands for their own safety and quality of life there are so many different ways to achieve this!!

I first saw them on The Dog Whisperer and was shocked that they are allowed ... and those horrible collars with prongs .. I couldn't bring myself to use them!!

I even have a problem with choke chains ... I use a partial one which gives the correction without actually choking him!!

I agree ban the shock collars!!!

Re: Shock Collars debate

It is somethign I would never use myself and I agree it should be banned. It is suprising how many people use them on the gundog field, mainly the same reasons other people use them, they are too lazy to train their dog properly, or find out how to train it properly.

Rebecca, out of interest, why do you feel the need to use a half choke collar? It still has the same effect, albeit not quite so bad.

Unhappy Re: Shock Collars debate

Hi
I use the half choke after attending training classes and getting a recommendation from them. My pup is a staffie and we were starting to have problems with him pulling on the lead and this was recommended as a way to help manage this - and i have to say it has worked. He is so much better walking now... i found that on his normal collar he would pull despite nearly choking himself but with this because he gets more of a surprise he stops ...

I would never use a full choke as i don't like the thought of how they would feel for him and feel these are cruel .. never considered the half choke the same way (maybe this is me being naive) - my aim is that we use it as a training tool and not a permanent collar so i am hoping it will disappear from our lives over the coming months!

are they the same as full choke??

I am not overly familiar with Staffords, so maybe someone who is can give some better advice. However, I certainly wouldn't be using a training class that suggested it as a way to stop your dog pulling on the lead. I'm pretty sure you can get haltis and similar designed to fit breeds like Staffords, so maybe that would be a better option?

I train to walk to heel either by using a licker and food lure/treat, or by simply stopping if the dog pulls. The idea being that a dog pulls because it wants to get somewhere quickly, so by stopping until the lead is loose again, you are teaching the dog that pulling is counterproductive, and the quickest way to get what it wants is by keeping the lead loose. You do have ot be consistent though, if you let the dog pull, even once, and keep on walking, it will be even harder. It does require some patience too!

Hope this helps.

Re: Shock Collars debate

Hi
Thanks, we did try the stopping however found that he still pulled ... maybe i wasn't patient enough

I am really please with his progress now so i think i will give it another go this afternoon when we go for a walk ... the trainer did also recommend the halti but also said that as it looks like a muzzle its worth considering that with a dog that some people can perceive as dangerous it can create the wrong impression which was what put me off and ultimately steered me towards the half choke ...

Hopefully it has served the purpose now and i can start with the food reward to reinforce what he has learned so for .....
thanks for the advice
