I am really please with his progress now so i think i will give it another go this afternoon when we go for a walk ... the trainer did also recommend the halti but also said that as it looks like a muzzle its worth considering that with a dog that some people can perceive as dangerous it can create the wrong impression which was what put me off and ultimately steered me towards the half choke ...
Hopefully it has served the purpose now and i can start with the food reward to reinforce what he has learned so for .....
thanks for the advice

Hi!
Yes, they do still pull at first. Once you stop, if he is still pulling, call him back to your side with a treat, then when the lead is loose, carry on walking. But be prepared to have to stop again almost right away and start again!

It takes infinate patience, and you need to allow longer for your walks! If you haven't got time to do it, don't walk him until you have.
You can also practice with the food lure in the garden or the house, so it is easier for him to start with than when you're out. Get a handful of really tasty, smelly treats that he doesn't usually have, in your right hand. Hold the lead in your right hand also, but dog on your left. Have one treat in your left hand and hold it by your side in front of his nose, so he sits next to you. Give him the treat. Get a new treat in your left hand, and walk a few steps, give him the treat, get a new treat in your left hand, give him the treat etc etc.
When he is getting goo dat it, you can hold your hand a bit higher, and give treats less often. He will start to look at you when he is walking, for a treat, which will help keep his attention when you're out.
I can see what you're trainer issaying about a halti looking like a muzzle, but really?! Who cares what anyone lese thinks? I'd rather someone thought my dog was wearing a muzzle than I was yanking on his neck constantly all the time.
Hope this helps a bit more, I'm exhausted after all that!
