Have I made a mistake not crating?

I decided not to use a crate with Murphy.Mainly because my kitchen is not really big enough for one as its a small galley kitchen. With housetraining I am taking him out hourly in the day.Yesterday we had our first accident free day (hope it continues) , but at night I just leave him and clean the mess in the morning.Usually one poo and small amount of wee by the back door. I was thinking that at 15 weeks he is just too young to hold it through the night yet and as I don't get up I am happy to clean in the morning. I have heard though of dogs alot younger being dry all night through crating. I'm now wondering if I could have problems or will it come at night eventually now he is learning where to go in the day through praise and hourly take outs?

Re: Have I made a mistake not crating?

we've crate trained our murphy and he's only 12 weeks this saturday and he goes from 12 at night till 7 in the morning dry (although he would let us know if he needed out)
we've had no accidents for 3 weeks now so i believe crate training can be very helpful for toilet training. murphy loves his crate and sleeps in there all day (with door open) the door to his crate is only locked at night and if we have to nip out for an hour during the day he is left with the run of the kitchen and we dont come back to anything.
but everyone is different some people like it and some dont. some of our families think we are being cruel locking him in there at night.

Re: Have I made a mistake not crating?

We had a crate from day 1 with Reuben (got him at 8 weeks) and first night, I let him out for a wee 3 times, 2nd night we let him out once and since 3rd night he has gone through the night and never had an accident in his crate.

Now Reuben (16 weeks) goes to bed at 10pm ish and up at 7am weekdays and 8.30/9.00am weekends. So he can def hold his bladder now. Though i have no idea what would happen if he wasn't crated at night?

Re: Have I made a mistake not crating?

Our latest addition maddy who is now 14 weeks has been in the crate at night since we got her at 7 weeks. She still has accidents i.e one poo and a wee in the crate. Depends really on the dog.

Re: Have I made a mistake not crating?

Dougal is shut in the kitchen but is not crated. At first I used to get up a few times in the night to let him out. Now I leave him from 10pm until 6am.

He's only poo'd once in the kitchen during the night and that was a couple of weeks ago. He still usually does 1 wee on the pad by the door. When he wasn't well the other night, he spent the night on my bed and went through with no problems.

Re: Have I made a mistake not crating?

I have Labrador puppy who's coming up on 4 months and he used to do exactly what you describe. I too leave him in the kitchen overnight.

The way I got round it was by gradually increasing the night time. I started putting him in at midnight and getting up at 5:30am to take him out. Then I got up 5 or 10 minutes later each morning. Now he goes to bed at midnight, I get up at 8am and he's fine.

Good luck with it, he should get there in the end.

Re: Have I made a mistake not crating?

kira is 8 & 1/2 months now and still not reliably toilet trainied, we got her at 12 weeks so she was a bit late in starting training, i also think she had been beaten for going on the floor a few weeks ago we got her a crate and since then we have had about 4 accidents, all during the day because we were not quick enough to jump up and open the back door. she goes to bed at midnight and is let out for about 30 minutes at 5.00 then put back in untill i get up. she goes longer on weekends so we know she can hold it, she just chooses not to when shes out of the crate

Re: Have I made a mistake not crating?

hi i crate trained my latest dog (maxi turbo) and when he was a littly i used to put him to bed at 8.30 then let him out the following morning at 7.00,he has never peed in his cage, he pooed in the house once.
i have also had dog who were rescue dogs and got bennyboy at a year old he was not house trained it took 6 weeks of perseverance but we got there in the end.
i do think crate training really can help
having a young dog who knows where his safe area helps a lot.
and to him it is his den.
so i dont think it is to late for you to do it.
but again i would put his nice comfy nice smelly bed in the crate
and make it fun hide treats in it.
sit with him in the crate ......not locked, i have a ikea blankie over the crate so it is like a den,oh and dont get to big a crate.
i have my crate beside my computer
ahhhhh good thinking lol
and persevere.
i wouldnt leave my dog who is now a year old in the crate when im in the house.
just me i dont think there is any need.
unless you have a compulsive chewer
anyway i hope i have helped
noogsy
