Unhappy Help With Leaving My Dogs On Thier Own...

Hello, Im new to this so hi to everyone

I've got 2 larbrador cross' and they will both be 3 years old next sunday (happy birthday to them! lol) Anyway we got our dogs (me and hubby) when we were both working full time.....when i say full time, its not as bad as it seems...you see my husband was working shifts so the dogs were never on thier own for more than 4 to 4 and a half hours at the very max!!! (and that was every other week) Anyway we've tried our best to get the training right from the beginging and set a quite good rountine with them and due to this have only had a few problems which were easily sorted.
However, we are now stuck!!! we've now got a 7 month old daughter and the dogs are great with her (again lots of time spent with the dogs preparing for baby and all seems great) APART FROM WHEN THEY ARE OWN THIER OWN!!! they bark all the time when we go out and im sure its because of seperation anxiety but havent a clue what to do about it??!! im sure its because thier "rountine" is now out of the window (im not leaving the house at the same time anymore) but i really need help to get this sorted. When we both worked, we left the dogs in the kitchen.......so i thought i might try giving them the run of the kitchen, landing, stairs and hall way but it hasnt worked (maybe this space is freaking them out more!?? am i doing more harm than good with this??) Our neighbours luckily are good but i need to resolve the barking cos its really upsetting me (i know the dogs arent happy ) and its getting to the point where i hate going out!!!! tips....advice....would be very very very helpful!!!!! Thanks xxx

Re: Help With Leaving My Dogs On Thier Own...

Have you tried leaving them with kongs, or toys etc and some background noise such as radio/tv?

Red face Re: Help With Leaving My Dogs On Thier Own...

hi shy.lady
the only thing i can think of, is to leave them on their own for VERY short periods of time. ie. 5 mins then come back into them. then increase the time.this way they will get used to coming and going.

I agree with leaving the radio on I always do, otherwise my 2 bark at every thing they hear cos they think its us or someone else coming home. The radio gives a constant noise in the background so they get used to it and settle down.

I agree with the others: Radio, toys that will keep them busy (but safe toys to have unsupervised so no raw ride type chews etc) and you could try the DAP infusor as it really helps settle mine.

the DAP thingy is doggie phemones and you get a plugin one or in a spray and it dosn't smell for humans, but it helps for speration anxitey and things like that. You can get in most big petshops and in the vets.

We got a plug-in when my puppy came home and it really helped him settle hardly had any crying. We stopped using it as he was so calm. Then recentlly with spring and the foxes and cats being nosiy at night we have started using it again and it has really helped as he was barking through the night.

The plug-in is about £25 and you can get refilles for it.

Re: Help With Leaving My Dogs On Thier Own...

1. Leave radio on talk station
2. DAP's infuser - works well
3. Leave room for short periods
4. Leave house for short periods
5. Give good walks before leaving them
6. Ignore dogs for approx 10 minutes before leaving
7. No prolonged goodbyes

Above should help. Good luck
