What's wrong with my pup?

He's a 5 month old patterdale, he's fed 3 times a day and is wormed regularly, but will eat ANYTHING. I've just caught him in the garden where he's found a part of the garden where ther is no grass and he's eating the mud underneath. When we take him out for walks he's constantly searching for something to eat and we really have to watch him because he likes any sort of poop. He once ate loads of freshly laid (sorry TMI) cat poo and then promptly threw up everywhere. He never stops begging and sniffing around for food. It's really starting to annoy us now. I'm quite sure he eats our other dog's poo, and will happily sit in the garden all day eating grass and leaves.

Also, he's mostly house trained now but still does several poops and wees during the night. Shouldn't he be able to hold it now, or is he just being naughty? How do we get around this without punishing him? We've had him since he was 8 weeks and started his training straight away, but he doesn't seem to be getting anywhere.

Please please help...we've got a baby on the way and I can't see how we're going to cope with his behaviour as well as a newborn...

Re: What's wrong with my pup?

All my dogs eat grass as well they'll eat it from the garden as well as out on walks. They always have done. Two of mine used to eat poo when they were pups they grew out of it but now and again they do still like a chomp pf horse or cow poo.

At 5 months i think there's a few pups who would still have accidents now and again, i'm sure he'll get there and be fully house trained soon for you.

Re: What's wrong with my pup?

Good Advice given,
Your pup is not been naughty,he is been a puppy.
Wth regards to toilet training at night,it may be worth you getting up during the night to take him out.

Both of mine eat grass, wood, leaves etc,we never leave them unattended in the garden as meg has a passion to dig up bulbs, plants flowers, even rose bushes She also used to eat her own poo,we just called her away gave her a treat and cleaned it up immediatly.

Re: What's wrong with my pup?

My pups 8.5 months now and we still have problems with him eating whatever he finds, had to take him to the vets on friday after he ate a whole fat ball netting inclueded, luckliy he vomited it all at vets and there was no damage done.

Is he eating this stuff on walks on or off lead?

Toilet trainning can take a long time, so hang in there, you just have to keep your eyes on him I'm afraid.

Re: What's wrong with my pup?

If you dont already i would sudgest a crate for night time to prevent him from pooing in the house dogs dont like messing in their own bed , And the poo thing is normal in some dogs ,some do it just as pups, some always do it no matter how old, our Daisy loves horse poo lol it comes out looking the same as it did going in , have you had him wormed rescently , and also food can have a big part in how much they scavenge, what do you feed him on is it giving him all he needs for his breed and energy output ect ,

Talking Re: What's wrong with my pup?

with your pup still toileting during the night, it is quite normal.

you can stick to your toileting plan with him, but you can try toilet him before he goes to bed and wait until he goes to the toilet before he goes to sleep.

i have a 10 week old pup who goes to the toilet before bed, but will sometimes get up during the night wanting to go again. i try to keep her awake for as long as possible before we go to bed and also play with her to get her bowels and water woks moving. if we go to bed at 10pm, she will be up about 2am for the toilet and if she goes to bed at 12pm, then she will be up at 6am for the toilet and breakfast.

you could try getting up with him to let him out to do his business, it works and the longer you are persistant the less accidents you will have.

Re: What's wrong with my pup?

I would just like to say I feel very lucky with my pup as I can count on one hand the amount of accidents he has had!! I'm not saying he is perfect as we have other problems at the mo like the biting and pulling on the lead but as for toilet training he has been a dream!!
We got him when he was 9 wks and he his now 7 mths and like I say only a couple of accidents!!
I agree, get a crate, they are a god send!! Dont know how we would of coped without one!! With a Springer it's the only way we can make him calm down and rest, otherwise he would lay for about 2 mins and then get up and go again!! And he would never go toilet in there!! He goes in about 10.30pm and gives us a call about 6.30 ish to go out, he dont bark either he sort of gives a little squeek like he knows not to wake everyone, bless him!!

Re: What's wrong with my pup?

I'm no expert on this but have a pup myself and can share my experiences in the hope they help u a little

Don't know how anyone copes without a crate lol....we got Maya when she was 5 months and shes now 7, I rememeber my friend sayin do u want the crate and not really knowing I said ok just in case. Don't know how I would have coped without it! she goes to bed around 10.30 and she knows its bedtime she gets a gravy bone and she she jumps in so fuss at all and depending on how busy a day shes had will sleep anywhere to between 5am and 7am and willl just yap a little in the morning not proper barking just enough to let us know shes needs out. Many a time I have been up at 5 to let her out but she does her stuff straight away and will settle back down for another couple of hours. We have a a few accidents along the way but she has never ever soiled her crate at all. Also when we need to go out for a few hours she goes in cos then I know shes safe and well as knowing my house is safe

With regards to the poo eating she used to do it a lot and last week we were away sorting my mother in laws house out and I have to admit we were so busy I missed her going a few times only know cos I caught her eating it and now we are home she goes in the garden fine and doesn't touch it so I know she was trying to hide the evidence and it wasnt her fault at all so although its disgusting its hard to be mad cos it was totally my fault not hers. On the way home she took a fancy to rabbit droppings in the country park we stopped at and promptly threw them back up on the way home!

Just think of them as babies at 5 months your pup is very much still learning when u have your newborn I'm sure u will at some point have the same problems with him/her tryin to put everything they see in their mouth

just give it a little time I'm sure u will get there I think aswell once they get past the 6 month stage they seem to be more receptive Maya seemed to be much better after 6 months she seemed to learn much quicker.

Good luck with the pup and the new baby
