Training advice needed please.

hi all was wondering if anyone could tell me how they trained there puppy to stay, heel, and come back when they are off there lead, have looked at a few websites and books but none really tell you what to do and whether to use treats or not. we have a dachshund girl who is 18 wks old and we were reading a website the other day about them and it said that they are intelligent dogs but stubbon and are really hard to train and when they are in pursuite of something they will not listen to you. Any info or tips would be much appreciated thanks

Re: Training advice needed please.

Extendable leads work extremely well when starting the recall for the first time.

Luika is now 10 weeks old, and already sits, downs, stays and recalls, albeit a short attention span!

I should stress however, that this all takes place in our garden, without distraction, but next Wednesday will be his first walk in a public place.

With an extendable lead you are still in control, hence my suggestion

daycare4dogs is an unknown quantity at this point
Talking Re: Trainig advice needed please.

my rotty pup is also 10 weeks old now and she already knows: sit, give paws, dinner, high five, lay down, bed, toilet, drop, recall and is working on stay at the moment, shes doing well with the stay.

i have been training her with positive reinforcement and this works very well. i train with her for 5-10 minutes so that she learns just enough in one session and also to keep her interested in the activity. when she does something right i reward her with affection and a special treat. She only gets a carob drop when she is training and no other time. When she is toilet training and does a wee outside she gets a very small piece of cheese.

You can use tasty treats when she responds and does the correct command you are asking for; such as cheese. remember though that the cheese is a reward and she should only be given this in small pieces and only given when command training. whilst toilet training or lead or even crate training use a different treat. the variation in treats is very important, because she will love the cheese and pretty much do anything for it! (even stubbern dogs)

you may find that clicker training will be very beneficial for your dog, because it is instant positive reinforcement, she will learn the click means food reward very quickly and will respond well to the commands and also learn much more quickly.

i have used clicker training before and it is a great method for traing puppies and older dogs.

take a look at this website for clicker traing and tips: Fifteen Tips for Getting Started with the Clicker | Karen Pryor Clickertraining

hope this helps!

Why don't you try clicker training. I have trained my dog using a clicker right from the start and have found that it has great results.
Once you have done all of the basic stuff, you can also go on to teach tricks and do obedience medals etc.
One really good book on clicker training and training in general is called " Clicker Training for Dogs" by Karen Pyror and another really good book which gives you step to step guide of how to teach your dog to sit, heel, down and tricks too is called "Dog Tricks" by Mary Ray.
Hope that hopes.

Re: Trainig advice needed please.

I forgot to mention this but for the recall - why don't you consider training her to recall to a whistle? You can by dog whistles in most good pet shops.

Always remembering to adjust your dogs diet according to the treats given as rewards

Re: Trainig advice needed please.

Why dont you get yourself along to some classes - they are brilliant for the dog as she will be socialising with other dogs and as you sound like a novice owner then they will show you the best way to train your dog
