Hi everyone
I have a five month old english bulldog /beagle who is very cute and tons of trouble. We've had him for almost two months now I love my pup but! i have a few concerns though and i'm hoping i might be able to get some advice as to what i should do: 1. he still pees on the floor at night3-4 times a week, no matter how late/early he is walked. it sometimes helps when i let him out around 3 am but not always. I found a present this morning and he had peed at two am. 2. he has temper tantrums during which he bites, HARD about 3 times a week. Usually when i need to grab his collar if he miss behaves or if its raining and he needs a pat down which he doesn't like. time outs seem to work half the time, one trainer suggested talking to him firmly and trying to hold him stready while he freaks out but it only ends up withscratched hands and a tired pup, and both of us very frustrated. I'm very concerned it might be dominance. 3.and last but i think most importantly. He hates strangers and their attention. To my knowledge this dog has never been abused or been in any situation to cause this reaction, he balks when someone tries to pet him, I've tried handing out treats to strangers to make it a pleasant experience but have seen little change in two months. He barks (a lot) if anyone comes to the door, even jumps up on them. (we've been asking people to ignore him and then give him a treat when he is calm and sits down at their command. but i don't know if this is right) He's great for other stuff, and we're trying very hard to be careful and to be consistent and calm pack leaders (he has to earn everything. eg. sit and wait to eat until a command is given, we walk in the door first, he has to earn his treats etc. So what are we doing wrong? one woman argued he wasn't getting enough exercise, but we walk him an average of almost three hours a day and play with him in the house as well. His bad behaviour leaves me frustrated and feeling helpless, i'm not a first time dog owner but this time of aggressive behaviour is definetly new to me. please help! Re: what should i expect from a five month old pup?
what breed is he.
it sounds horrible for you at the mo. you would be best to contact a local dog trainer as he seems to have a few problms at the moment. my sister in law has a chow chow who was a bit worse but just trying by herself she now has the dog from hell(poor thing)who has bit 5 people now. sorry its not much help. |

Re: what should i expect from a five month old pup?
he has his bed and he sleeps in it (we say pillow and he lies down) he also has a time out corner. which he now recognises and surprised us once but going there himself when he knew we were upset at him.
He's almost 45 pounds of muscle, he get a 30-45 minute walk in the morning, a 20 minute walk around dinner time and either two short walks or one longer 30-45 minutes in the evening. he's at home from 9 to 4-30 or five by himself and it going well, he sleeps or plays with his toys and stays in the living room. |

Re: what should i expect from a five month old pup?
he's walking too much. he should have 2-3 x 25 minute walks a day, so around 50 min - 1 hr 15 mins walking a day, not 3 hours. and he's home alone for 7 1/2 - 8 hours a day? that's too much. can you get a dog walker? beagles are very people dogs and need human company. a crate may be good for night time as he's unlikely to soil it.

Re: what should i expect from a five month old pup?
I think its too much exercise for a dog so young, I beleive the guidline is approx 5 mins for every month til the pup is over 12 months? he's also on his own quite a lot during the day, during that time he is really being his own boss, and not being instructed in any way, the biting MUST be stopped now, because while you may be able to cope with it as a pup you certainly wont as an adutl, and nobody else will either, maybe taking him to classes would be a good thing tire him out mentally istead of physically.

Re: what should i expect from a five month old pup?
You do have to be carefull how long you walk hem but it does depend on the type of walk tbh i have never stuck to the 5 min per month rule as it does depend on the breed a would have caused problems in other ways with mine if i had, definetly a 25 min walk for yours at 5 months he would be going stir crazy if he has a lot of beagle in him which it sounds like he has. I would consult a behaviourist/trainer you certainly dont want this behaviour to escalate.

As the others have said he is having way too much exercise. Hope things calm down for you, that choice of breed for a first dog would not have been mine! |

Re: what should i expect from a five month old pup?
Hi,
I haven't heard of a Beagle crossed with an old english bulldog before, was that an accident or were they bred on purpose?... just interested to know. I don't know much about Bulldogs but Beagles can be very hard work and quite frustrating. We had alot of problems with attention seeking. Presumably you have rehomed him, if so, do you know why, same problems? Depending on how long he has actually been toilet trained for, I would have thought by now he should be dry at night, with maybe the odd accident but obviously all dogs are different. I think you need the help of a behavioural expert and agree that a dog walker may help him to get into a routine. I hope you get some good advice and things improve for you and your pup soon x |
