Re: what should i expect from a five month old pup?
Thank you for all the advice. I wanted to give you all an update on how he is doing.
He is a buldog mix and is increadibly muscular and medium energy. He's also not my first dog. I had a german shepperd chow cross for nineteen years. We seem to have almost resolved the problem. We stayed consistent with his time outs and our reactions to his bad behaviour, something his previous owners seem not to have done. Biting has stopped completely and he is no longer going in the house. He is wonderful in the house, but we also make sure he has plenty to keep him busy while we are gone. I believe his behaviour was caused by miss-training or a lack thereoff, he met him old owner for about an hour last week and started to misbehave then and there because ofthe rough play. He has an occasional (we're down to 1 in the last 5 days) tantrum when i make his sit and stay on a walk, for more than thirty seconds. Hopefully that will pass as well with guidance. He is becoming the most wonderful, fun and smart dog. I have one concern however. And it is shared with my vet and other dog friends, and that is the five minute rule. Most dogs are made to move and run, while you shouldn't wear a pup out it's important to understand your dogs needs and body language. our walks are to the park and in the grass, the walk time includes play and socializing with other dogs. In my opinion,25 minutes a day is simply not enough for an active pup, but I respect the choice to do so. Again thank you for the advice, I sincerely appreciate the support. |

Re: what should i expect from a five month old pup?
ps. To answer all questions:
I found our recently that people are trying to bread the cross and with some success. I'm not a fan of designer breeds but it does seem that our pup is one. and to my knowledge he was supposed bred on purpose to be 3/4 bull dog and 1/4 beagle, but his physic seems to show that he is half/half. He's gotthe smelling needs of a beagle and is self tought to fetch things like his toys. his shape is roughly that of a bulldog but longer and leaner with a longer nose. he's about just above my knees now and we're seriously wondering how big he plans to get, as he's just passed his expected 40 pounds of what looks like pure muscle and he will be 6 months on the 27th of october. He's very affectionate and sleeps with all four paws in the air like a bull dog. he doesn't have the beagle bark (thank god). He also seems to be a self made guard dog, and i am notified by a short bark (he's told to shush and the distracted form barking more, this seems to have helped quite a bit) He is learning to pee and poop on command and this has been tremendous in reducing accident at home, which have virtually disapeard. he sleeps in his doggy bed that is next to ours (he's not allowed on the bed) He's still shy of being pet by strangers but he will stop and give a paw to them for a treat. he's quite friendly if he meets someone several times, though cuddles and lots of petting seem to be reserved for very close friends and family. |

Re: what should i expect from a five month old pup?
Quote:
But that's not what you asked about, so; 1) Full house training can take up to 8 months, it is hard to stop a dog peeing through the night as you are asleep. A crate my help to deter the dog from peeing as it cannot move away from it's own mess, clearly if it can make it through the day without peeing it can last the night, but has not yet learned it shouldn't pee inside - my advise try a crate. 2) Temper tantrums should not be forced to stop - put the pup in a room on it's own until it calms down, when it is calm bring it back out. If it bites hard, yelp and turn away, maybe he needs to learn some control - if you show pain in a way he can recognise he will understand. If he is destructive a crate may be a better place to hold him until he is calm. The dog will not be trying to dominate you at 5 months - he is too young - it is likely something else...fear....boredom....attention seeking etc. 3) Is he excited by visitors, or aggressive? if excited carry on as you are. If it is real aggression you need to show the behaviour is not acceptable and it may be advisable to seek on-site help for specific advice. Beagles (or their crosses) don't make great pets as they have a strong pack mentality and require lots of stimulation. They do not fair well if left alone for long periods. If the pup is bored all day on it's own this could be the basis of it's anxiety. Can you reduce this alone time in any way?
