stop my dogs from barking at ppl who come in the house

i have to lurchers a year old and 7 months old, i don't have ppl round the house very often. so when ppl come round they bark non-stop, at them but dont calm down. i dont think the treat thing would work either as they bark because they are scared and don't get near the people coming in to the house. they go out alot and meet ppl and if its someone they know then they dont bark. am i just complaining about a normal dog thing?

Re: stop my dogs from barking at ppl who come in the house

I would still have some treats in a container by the front door, so when you have a visitor then you can give them a few and when the dogs come close offer them a treat, I wouldnt let the visitors try to make a fuss of them as it would only make it worse if they are frightened already, if they dont accept them from hand then they could throw them a little way in front of them but stand still and allow the dogs to take them. see if this works, someone else may have a better solution. My dogs always bark when the door knocks or the door bells rings this is normal. sometimes they stop straight away and sometimes they bark for about 4 mins, but they always stop then. I hope someone can give you some other advice to help out xxx

Re: stop my dogs from barking at ppl who come in the house

I saw the same problem on a program called the dog whisperer, he allowed the dog's to run to the door barking, then he offered them some treats, but he had the dog's come away from the door to him when he gave them. He told them to sit, he opened the door to someone who obviously knew the plan, the whisperer gave him some treats to give to the dog's & told them away. The dog's learned their job was done. They went & settled down.
It probably took a few day's & a few hiccups but it worked.

Re: stop my dogs from barking at ppl who come in the house

Thanks for the advice, i will try the dog whisper one as he's good. its just with ppl they dont know. but they usually dont stop barking so i have to shut them in the garden or in a room away which i know isn't helping, but it a mad rush when ppl come to the door its just a quick solution. thanks for the advice.
