Re: dogs uneasy with people

Agree with whats been said - dont waste your money on therapists - this is something you can do with a few family and friends etc.....Mals are on the whole great with kids - of course there are always a small percentage of any breed that will go agaisnt the grain - its their upbringing not the breed.
Patience with your babies and they will soon learn - slowly slowly catchy monkey

Re: dogs uneasy with people

To start to socialise these babies do take them out one at a time if you have a friend with a confident dog ask them to walk with you when you meet someone you know ask them to come down to pups level - when I judge pups I kneel so that I am not towering over them (all 5 ft of me ) if they are treat orientated give the stranger a treat to give them but dont make a fuss about it, if that doesnt work just stand and talk to the stranger ignoring pup the condident dog will want to make a fuss and slowly pup will be inquisitive and hopefully start to sniff hands etc tell them not to move and let the pup do their own thing. Try not to go the way of a therapist they are sometimes barmy!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish all judges were as considerate as you, Tashi! One female judge (who shall remain nameless because she is very well known) spooked my grey girl so badly at her first champ show by leaning over her without warning, booming "What have we here then?" and grabbing her ears that it's taken us almost three years to get her not to back away from female judges in the ring.

Re: dogs uneasy with people

Hi. Can anybody help me? i have a mongel collie cross, we got her from a rescue centre. Everytime somebody comes into my house she goes for their feet and it's really hard to control her not to do that. I have to hold her back whilst she is trying her best to get to the persons feet. Can anybody help me to calm her down?
Thanks

I would get an indoor lead, I have one as my dog got very barky and wouldn't settle till the vistor was sitting down (and had been for a while)

That way tyou have more control over the dog, you can get them at most good pet shops and/or training centres

You could also try DAP spray and just use it when there are vistors.

My dogs learnt now that when we have visiters that usally means tea and cake (hence a dog biscuit for him!) so he's learn't that if he dosesn't settle he has to go into the other room and then he can't have his biscuit

Re: dogs uneasy with people

just a quick update, dropped the dogs in the deep end and took them up the road to wait for my kids to come out of school, thinking where better to get them used to crowds of people, (1500), and it has had a good effect on Reno. It only took him a few minutes to let people come up and stroke him, and he relaxed quite quickly, however Mikito wasn't having any of it. But overall it was very successful and will repeat it again soon. It was also handy to find out that a lad is threatening my daughter and i would like to bump into him
