My dog eats her own poo

I have a 5 month old female shih tzu. She isn't toilet trained but its not as bad as what she does, she eats her own poo. Its getting to me now. I'll find bits of it in her bed or when I get up in the morning she has left patches were she has done it and eaten it.
Now what can I do? I don't see her do it sometimes as she is that quick. She does it and eats it instant.
Help!

Re: My dog eats her own poo

It could be for a few reasons

Some anaimals just do it (rabbits do it too), but you say shes not toliet trainned so it could be trying to hide it.

Apprantly also if they feel they lack nuritents they can do it, espicaslly if its runny they can think that it will make them better by eating it.

I would say if you try and sort out the toilet training and give lots of praise (and treats if you choose) when she goes in the right place then that should help the problem, I know it did with mine!

Best of luck!

Re: My dog eats her own poo

What are you feeding her? Like Gemma said it could be a lack of good nutrition but it could also be one of those things, some dogs do it for no apparent reason.

Why isn't she toilet trained? I would definatly start there.

Prevention is always better than a cure so try to not put her in a position where she can eat it if at all possible. Also you can use treats to distract her from eating her mess while you clean it up.

Re: My dog eats her own poo

Yeh Kia used to do that.. she would eat cat and horse poo aswell!

She grew out of it eventually, I think some dogs just like the taste of it

But as above, think toilet training her will probably help solve the problem

Re: My dog eats her own poo

Its rather common with this breed for them to do this, my sisters 6 month old pup does it. The best thing you can do is just try and get it up straight away

Perhaps you need to go back to basics and take her out at the recommended times for young pups, i.e. after eating, drinking, sleeping and playing and plenty of times inbetween, staying out with her until she goes and giving lots of praise afterwards.

Yeh AJ's advice is probably the best way to do it.. she'll get the hang of it eventually

Re: My dog eats her own poo

Don't worry puppies do go through a stage of eating their own poo disgusting as it is it is quite normal.
How long has she been doing it for?
