Gun Dog Training

Hi

I've just registered so hello!!!! **waves**. We have an 11 month old yellow rescue lab who got too boisterous for his former owners (had him for 7 weeks). Unfortunately, my old hero of a hound, lab x huntaway was put to sleep within 2 weeks of the pup arriving due to a deterioration from kidney failure. The old dog was highly obedient and one of those superhounds you never forget The aim was for him to be around a lot longer to help teach the youngster how to behave (I have a horse, so wanted to get the training pushed along so I could take the babba out with me after a few months).

As it stands, the youngster was quite badly behaved. Seemed to love running away from humans with their prized possessions in his mouth. We've just about stopped this by positive reinforcement and not chasing him, so it's all very lacklustre if he does it now. He now sits, waits for food until 'release', leaves treats until told, walks to heel and his tour de force is finding a stick I've touched but he can't see where I've thrown it, BUT has the puppy willfullness of lalalalalalala not listening when out in the field. He's run after some cyclists a jogger, other dogs and I fear one day it will be horses... so his mind needs to be focussed.

After a local trainer heard about his pros and cons she advised junior gun dog class. We start next week

Can anyone please tell me what we should expect in these classes?? I have no idea and can't find info anywhere on the web!!

Many thanks!!!!

Re: Gun Dog Training

Ooo thanks Carol. That's really interesting. Good to see what he'll be doing!!! He does those things already BUT only when other dogs aren't around, so a group class will certainly be interesting.

THank you

Re: Gun Dog Training

I flipping hope so.. there's only so much embarrassment I can take at being looked at like a 'typical lab owner*' which drives me bonkers

* and by that I mean the type of folk he was rescued from who thought he was a cute Andrex puppy..

oh god, that's US at the moment!! we now control it as much as we can by getting his attention and putting him on the lead, then letting him off when they are close enough for play. No room for error with this wee bubba

I let him off the lead at the stables tonight, due to noone being there. He buggered off for 10 mins and then just swam in the pond for yonks like I wasn't there. I didn't get stressed and finally got hold of him. This is our only problem with hm.. the 'lalalalalalala' ship. Am pleased he ignored the ducks though which has been a massive problem before... he'd rather just swim YAY **boing**

That's exactly what I do! If the dog really wants to follow my lot I pick up the pace so the owner has to run after us!

It gets a bit annoying having to wait for owners to retrieve their dogs all the time! Especially when it's the same dog & owner everytime and they don't learn after it happening day after day after day.

No offence to you as you are obviously making a great effort to turn your dog into a well behaved little chubba!

Where it happens to me it is very open as well so they can clearly see me coming and have plenty of time to get them on lead but don't! They will learn if I have to start running away!
