Odd behaviour

Can anyone advise how to stop my 4 yr old to stop eating poo (including her own) horrible horrible..... she knows its wrong because when we are out she waits until I am far enough away from it and runs back.... I have attempted to put a muzzel (cloth one) on her but she cut all her noise rubbing it against the ground? Please help!

Re: Odd behaviour

Well, coprophagia is quite common, its usually a learned behaviour from the litter (seeing mum clear up after the pups) or a dietary deficiency.

So number one question, what are you feeding her?
What do you do/say when she does it?
What age did she start this?

I had a poo eater when i fed burns, i tried everything pineapple, chilli, catching her in the act. The simple answer was, nothing worked except changing her to a natural diet. Making sure she was getting the correct diet so she wasn't missing out on anything.

Incidently, she would still attempt to eat the poo of dogs fed canned food, simply because what went in, came out almost exactly the same! To dogs its a little snack, not an anti social habit.

Re: Odd behaviour

Its not really a odd habit,in fact i think its fairly common, cat poo, horse poo, rabbit poo and dog poo a doggy delicacy,my dogs line up when im cleaning out the rabbits just so they can eat any droppings that fallwhen ive caught them in the cat tray before, they dont even look like they like the taste!!just leave it a while before you kiss them

Re: Odd behaviour

Ours are the same, all love a bit of cat or rabbit poo, Milo will sometimes follow Bailey around nudging him for treats when he's out. Such lovely creatures!

With regards to eating dog poo and her own poo I agree with HandOnPaws.

What are you feeding her?

Re: Odd behaviour

Hi

So number one question, what are you feeding her?
James Wellbeloved dried food, she gets very excited when I feed her it..

What do you do/say when she does it?
We just say 'NO' and make her come back to us, which she does. She seems
to know it's wrong as she does it slighly. I have her mum too and she has never done it, obviously she did clean up after the litter.

What age did she start this?
She has always done the rabbit droppings, sheep droppings etc but very rarely ate dog poo, but this past 5 months she has been doing it all the time.

I just think all the effort I am trying to make with her food due her having epilepsy (and to be healthy obviously) and she then eats that when she is out...
