Basic guide to toilet training a pup?

Have been reading up on this and what I've gathered so far is take them out every half hour - 45 minutes, after mealtimes, sleeps and play and wait until they have done their business then give them lots of praise. Is this correct?

Also what is best to do at night? I will be crate training my pup and I have read that some people leave their pups in the crate all night (Taking the pup out last thing at night and first thing in the morning) and others take them out at night when they cry... Which one is better or is it entirely dependant on owner/pup?

How long does toilet training take? I;ve read anywhere between 3 months and 9 months. Is it realy that varied?

Also training pads. Are they any use?

Peace

Re: Basic guide to toilet training a pup?

Ollie was nearly fully toilet trained when we got him at 9 weeks, because the breeder put him out in the garden after each meal time, when they woke up etc so he got the idea before he could even walk. When we got him home, we left him in his crate all night and ignored any whining. I think that you are creating a rod for your own back if you respond to their whining. Ollie only pooed that first night, and that was the only soiling in the house ever. We didn't have to toilet train him at all so we were extremely lucky, but any good breeder in my opinion should have the puppy nearly fully toilet trained by the time it goes to it's new home.

I read that you are planning to take your puppy home at 10 weeks old. By this time, he should be fully toilet trained if the breeder has followed this through through his life.

After mealtimes, play, sleep, training sessions, during the advert breaks when you're watching telly and every 20 minutes to start with. When you've got a good idea of how often he needs to go, then you can maybe start stretching it to 45 mins if you think he can go that long.

Personally I got up in the night to let the puppy out for a wee. It's kinder and when they're little they can't hold on easily so if you don't, they'll either soil their bed or be uncomfortable. Not nice.

Yes.

No. All they do is teach the dog that it is OK to soil inside the house. You then have to wean them off the pads so in effect, you're toilet training twice. Start as you mean to go on.

Re: Basic guide to toilet training a pup?

I've emailed and asked her if they're being toliet trained now and how they're getting on I will probably be leaving the pup overnight for the first few months and be prepared for any clean-ups necessary!

Peace
