Question Excited puppy!

I'm new to forum and would greatly appreciate any tips.

Archie (cross Lakeland/Border Terrier) is now 5 months old and great at home with us, sit, down, wait, stay, etc but ...... practically ignores us on walks - just so excited! Loves people and other dogs and will pull and like mad to try and see them. Tried to distract him but, like I say, it's as if I don't exist!

Also, when he stops and decides he doesn't want to go my way what do I do? Tried waiting and ignoring him but would be there forever!

Re: Excited puppy!

try walking the other way , while your waiting for him your giving him the right to say where and when he goes so walk away from him call him and when he see,s your not with him he should , i say should run to follow you ,he is also still a pup so he will be very excited to meet other dogs ect our did and still do just that they will eagerly welcome others to join in play time , to some degree you should allow him to say hello as long as the other dog or dogs seem accomodating of him , as young pups often get very excited it does them good to soscialise .

Smile Re: Excited puppy!

Thanks for quick reply. Was concerned as Archie still pulls on lead and wondered if letting him pull towards dogs, etc might confuse not pulling at other times.

When he stops on walks he will just sit down (this is while on the lead) usually when he realises he's going home and doesn't want to, don't really like to pull him!

Re: Excited puppy!

Have you got him into any puppy classes?? They are great for you to learn new techniques of control and brilliant for Archie cos he'll meet other puppies and learn about doggy ettiquette then perhaps he wont turn so manic when he comes across another dog cos he'll be used to them

Red face Re: Excited puppy!

Thanks for advice. Did try one "puppy" class which turned out to be full of older dogs and Archie was almost used as a prop for owners to yell "leave" at their dogs!! Only went couple of times - currently looking for new one.

just carry on walking if he wants to sit he'll soon learn he gets a sore butt,
his trying to rule over you, his trying to tell you what to do.

Re: Excited puppy!

Hi I have an Archie too!

I would say to try a different class, I went to Royvon and they were good as they are quite specific about what age group goes in what class.

We also learned there how to get your dog to sit while you are talking to someone else with a dog, this has really helped me control my dog when he sees other dogs as now its more on my terms whether we say hello or not.

Talking Re: Excited puppy!

Thanks for all tips.

Just been confirmed I've managed to get him on proper puppy course - just 5 to 9 month olds - starting next Tuesday. Sounds really good, so fingers crossed!

Re: Excited puppy!

If he yanks just stop walking and pull him back on the leash so he's to the side or behind you, carry on doing this. if you are doing it right he should be walking by the side of you or possibly behind.
