Puppy jumping up

Hi All

My 6 month Irish puppy is a real problem with her jumping up at people. She use to do it to us but I was told to put my knee up every time she goes to jump at us and now she has stopped, which is great........problem is she does it to every one who enters our house and even if we meet people out on our walks. She just loves people and children and jumps up which is very embarressing at times.

My elderly mother in law visits regularly and Tilly almost knocks her off her feet if I don't get to her first to stop the jumping. My mother in law can't lift her knee up to Tilly or she may fall over so I just don't know how to stop this.

Today my sister and brother in law came to visit and within 1 min of them entering our house they both has muddy paw prints on there cloths. Ive even tried putting her in another room while visitors come in but she gets so worked up and when I do let her out to see them she is sooooo excited she jumps even more.

I know she is just a puppy and loves everyone but I have to nip this in the bud before she knocks someone over and hurts them. My young sons friends also come to the house and i don't want Tilly to jump up at them

Any Ideas?

That's what we have done with our pups; we tell everyone that comes in how to treat them, it might seem a bit rude/harsh to tell everyone what to do but you don't want to end up with this sort of behaviour ingrained, most people understand when you explain to them why.

Re: Puppy jumping up

Trouble is my mother in law will fall over if she lifts her knee everytime Tilly jumps up. My father is 75 and there is no way he could do it, he uses a walking stick to balance himself.

I did ask my visitors today to do this but she jumps so quickly they didn't get the chance and they got dirty marks on thier clothes.

Re: Puppy jumping up

she got the habit of doing it.
i would put her on a house line and when you open the door to someone make sure she's sitting and stand on the lead or line so its only got a little slack in the lead so when she goes and jumps she will then correct herself [as she jumps the lead or line pulls her back down, she cant jump]
then when she's sitting quietly give treats and the person coming in to take notice of her at all until she is carm, then they give her some treats as well.
if she goes to jump at anytime stand on the line so she can not.

I agree with Carol, good idea that. Saves shutting her out alltogether! I had an English Setter who was very bouncy too but he soon stopped with the knee action! They are wonderfull companions setters!
