Barney's barking problem

Hello all,

I know i have posted before about Barney and his barking, but yesterday was really bad.

We went to a fun day yesterday at the park and there were lots of dogs, and he just barked and barked. He comes across as being quite agressive but i think he just wants to play.

I also had a very stroppy and stubborn 5 year old to deal with as well and i lost it and stormed back to the car, probably not the best thing to do but its done now.

He also barked at me when i was making his tea, which i was not happy with so i took him out the kitchen until it was ready.

I have looked on the internet for advice and have tried the "be quiet" and then treat when he is quiet but it doesn't seem to work as he is getting worse rather than better.

Do you think he will grow out of it, he is being castrated on 30th Sept, i wonder if this will make any difference.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Barney's barking problem

Have you ever looked into the clicker training?

I used it with my oldest shih tzu when she was a puppy. It worked amazing. I also trained my friends dog (who was 3 years old). He had the same problem, constant barking. After three weeks it worked really well.

Here is a blog post I found about it. You can also try googling clicker training.

It's not for everyone but its what I've found that works. Good luck!

Re: Barney's barking problem

I also have a Barney who has just found his voice (he is 8 months).
I was told it's because he has taken on the roll as pack leader so every little thing he barks at is to warn us as he feels he needs to protect the rest of the pack, very sweet but also lots of headaches.

Not sure of a solution yet still looking for advice, been told not to stroke him and tell him it's ok as this is just praising the barking.

Not much help to you sorry but can understand your frustation.

Re: Barney's barking problem

Thanks both for the replies.

We use clicker training at puppy classes, but don't really use it much at home. I will have a look at your blog jaymay and see if this helps.
