Re: ok so yet ANOTHER question from me, so sorry

We decided that yelping never worked for us. Usually when my pup bites she is sitting on the sofa with us. If she bites we put her on the floor and say No in a very stern voice and Ignore, If she carrys on we place her out in the hallway (which is also where her den is!) We will then leave her there until she calms down (preferibly laying down!) If she comes back in and does it again, shes goes back out until she stops! This is working!

Re: ok so yet ANOTHER question from me, so sorry

ok this is what i did -

as soon as teeth touch skin (doesnt have to be a proper bite) is proper yelped, really really LOUD and very high pitched. I would then immediatly stand up and turn my back, sometimes that means spinning in circles lol.

As soon as he went off to do something else i would praise him and give him a cuddle. If he tried again i would repeat the yelp ignore process.

If i had done that 3 times an dhe was still coming back to bite after going off i would put him in time out - behind a stairgate for 10 minutes.

Keep repeating the process, it worked for me.

Re: ok so yet ANOTHER question from me, so sorry

Here's a few do's and don't's from my puppy behaviour book hope it helps

Do expect your puppy to mouth/bite.

Don't become cross with him.

Don't smack him (I'm sure this one's obvious LOL)

Don't waggle your finger in front of his mouth.

Do give him alternative things to chew and reward him for this behaviour.

Do avoid rough games that encourage mouthing/biting

Do play games where the puppy puts a toy in his mouth i.e fetch.

When he mouths/bites, say "ow" and then reward him for stopping and give him something else to do.

If this does not work, try a different noise, such as "ah" and then ignore him for a few moments.

Take extra care if children are around, as puppies find children so interesting.

Resist the urge to jump, run or flap your hands about as this makes you more interesting to chew on.

Everyone in the family must be consistant.

Don't expect it to stop immediately, but the frequency and intensity should gradually reduce over the weeks.

Re: ok so yet ANOTHER question from me, so sorry

Personally if the yelping, crying and moving away isn't helping, I would have the pup on a house line and put him/her in time out for 10 seconds every time he/she nips.

Time out basically means an immediate withdrawal of attention. So it should go like this:
Puppy nips, "that's enough" says owner, lead puppy into other room on houseline, shut line in the door frame, close door leaving puppy in the room for ten seconds only with you holding onto lead on the other side of the door, then allow puppy back in but do not acknowledge him/her too much or greet the puppy like a long lost relative.

Message to puppy:
you nip- no attention whatsoever!

Hope that helps

The yelping thing didn't work for Bailey either, it made him worse.
We just told him "No!" and removed ourselves, so no cuddles, playing, whatever if he does that.

It's a slow process but it's working.
