Re: which dog training books?

Puppies - Gwen Bailey's "The Perfect Puppy"

Further training - John Rogerson, Ian Dunbar, Jean Donaldson, Karen Pryor (very much clicker based).

Focus on trainers who use "positive training" in the blurb and don't mention "dominance" and you won't go far wrong.

Re: which dog training books?

Su- he is a 1 year old Rottie x Husky, he has had the basics such as house training, 'sit' etc but he is really keen to learn & I think it would be good for his mind. I wanted to take him to a local class but they don't appear to be holding them any more so I thought I would see if reading a few books might help

Hi, The book i have found quite usefull is Gwen Bailey's "How To Train a Super Dog" ,this goes right through all the different stages of training with some excellent pics (which i found very helpful), i do also have her puppy book which is good but a better buy now would be this other one as your dog is 1yr old .
There is lots of good info as well as training.
I got mine from amazon for £10 no p&p charges , full price was £14.99, so quite a good buy i thought.
I hope this is of help to you . su

Re: which dog training books?

well..... I went to the vet today & they gave me a big list of all the trainers in our area, so I'm totally wrong about there not being any local trainers, I am going to phone a few over the next few days. Thankyou all for your advice & I will definitely be investing in a pile of books as well

Re: which dog training books?

I would recommend The Dogs Mind by Bruce Foggle. Anything by Cesar Milan, Jan Fennell.

It depends what you want to learn. If it is simple training then probably the books that the others have recommended. If you want to learn about how dogs think, how to communicate with them and about pack status/mentality then go with my suggestions.....

x

No doubt somebody will come along and give you a reason not to go with my suggestion lol
