Is tuna ok for dogs?

Hi

i need something really meaty/stinky and dog delicious to help training with my dog.

Im really struggling with recalls outside the house, so thought if i had something as stinky as Tuna it might make it worth his while to come back!

Has anyone tried using tuna as a training treat for thier dog? Is it safe for them?

Thanks

Re: Is tuna ok for dogs?

We use liver to train our dogs, it's whiffier than tuna so works a treat.

Re: Is tuna ok for dogs?

I used to make liver cake - it stunk the house out; worse than cooking liver on its own but they love it.

Also sardine/pilchard cake is deliciously stinky and they go nuts for it

TBH though, it's easier to just cook some liver slowly in the oven, with some garlic granules sprinkled over it. Cut it up into tiny bits when it's cool. Liver cake IS good, but a) It's disgusting to make (and it blew up my food mixer), and b) It makes your house stink.

Re: Is tuna ok for dogs?

i have pigs liver to try but its currently in the freezer needs to be defrosted and cooked!

i want to do some training with him today and remembered i had cans of tuna. not caring if its mesy - just so long as it works and most importantly is safe for him to eat!! just the way things like onions and chocolate etc are poisonous, just wanted to check that tuna was ok as havent heard of anyone using it for thier dogs

We used to train our GSP with liver, even if it did stink the house out!

Re: Is tuna ok for dogs?

Recipe for making tuna cake

YouTube - How to make homemade dog treats

Wheat free recipe also:
YouTube - Wheat free dog treats

All you'd need to do would be to substitue the kipper for tuna in this instance

Just make sure that you use it as a high-value REWARD, as opposed to a lure/bribe - although luring is fine to start with, try to fade the lure as soon as possible and move on to making obedience the criteria for the reward
