How to stop 11 week old puppy growling when going to bed

My lovely natured, 11 week old Goldendoodle puppy has started to growl when its time to go to her crate at night.

I call her name and pat her bed to entice her, but I usually have to nudge or lift her up to go to bed. The last 3 nights she has started to growl and quite nastily last night. Any advise to nip this in the bud would be appreciated.

Also, I do not know if relevant but recently when we are playing tug of war she has also started growling, not nastily but growling nether the less. Is this acceptable or should I stop this also in case it escalates?

Is she tired enough to actually want to sleep? Covering the crate will help her settle into it too, putting some food in there will always help them settle too, when my pup was young id feed him just before bedtime and hed be out very quickly on a full tummy (bring last feed forward as she gets older)

Re: How to stop 11 week old puppy growling when going to bed

The tug of war may have to stop until you can find out what is making her growl, tug of war may just make the growling worse.
Have you tried to take her for a walk before she goes to bed, perhaps she just isnt tired enough to go. Perhaps her crate is in another room to where you sleep and may be missing you when you have gone and now knows when it is crate time you wont be there anymore. Try putting a radio on low so she have some background noise to soothe her. Dont make too much of a fuss when you get her in there either, just put her in say good girl and walk away. Praise her up with lots of love and cuddles in the morning so she gets used to knowing that the good stuff come in the morning. Make sure her room is nice and warm for her too.
Other than that I dont know what else to suggest, but there will be someone who will know more on here. good luck. (you got to stop that growling or it could turn nasty at a later date). xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Re: How to stop 11 week old puppy growling when going to bed

Is the crate a nice place to be? Is it cosy? Covering it may make it more "den-like". Do you fill a Kong/hollow bone with something tasty for the pup to enjoy when he goes into the crate? If you can make crate-time something to look forward to, by making it the only time pup gets a special treat like a Kong with a little peanut butter smeared inside it, you may well avoid the growling. He's clearly not happy about something.

As for the growling when playing tuggie - I'd view that as a good thing! It shows he's really "into" the game. My dog growls ferociously when playing tuggie. The important thing is being able to stop the game whenever YOU choose - teach him a "drop" or "leave" command and don't allow him to re-start the game until you give him permission in the form of a "get it" cue.
