I am going back to basic

As the title said, I have decided to go back to basic's with my boy.
He is getting so much work, Completely lazy to commands, No attention, Agression is getting silly.

I have spoken to a few trainers since my last thread, and most of them have said its because he has lost the training he once had

So after doing lots of research i have decided to re-train from the begining.
I have a list of training items, Can anyone let me know if i have missed anything out or if you would add something to it, to max the training sessions.

Treats,
Normal lead & collar,
Harness,
Training extendable lead,
Long lead,
Clicker,
Waterproof jacket
I have been told NO to muzzles.

Re: I am going back to basic

When i went back to basics with one of our dogs the other thing i did which is not on your list is not talk to the dog unless i wanted him to do something for a reason ie;recall and while out walking,it made such a difference with him,i guess i must have been moaning at him non stop for pulling/barking etc.now when i am out with him he looks up at me,i am sure just to make sure i am still there and the same when hes off lead he will run off ahead but does not go so far without turning round to see im still there, then when i recall him he comes straight back.
Good luck hope things improve for you and your dog

I think this is a very valid point. If I take my dog out alone, she is FAR sharper to commands. Whereas if I go out with a friend and we're chatting, she, naturally enough, "tunes out" my voice to a degree.

I'd also remind the OP that training should never stop, and can never really be considered "finished" - training should continue throughout the dog's life, otherwise they DO get hazy in time.

Put it this way - how much algebra do you remember from school, unless you use it every day in your job?

Re: I am going back to basic

Thank you for all of your help everyone.

I always thought that after training, that it did finsh and since found out i was wrong. The history with our boy is:-

Brought him at 12 weeks old, After noticing that he had burn marks and loss of hair and totally fearful of everything.! Speaking to the vets he confirm if we did not take the dog when we did, He may have well been killed or even used as a dog fighter. We then didn't start training until 11 months because of the contining vet treatment and social problems.

After this time the dog was fine, until the last few months. Vet has confirmed that he is fit and healthy.

Agression started after a dog charged at him in a local park and he was attacked. Since i have made things worse giving him pitty!

Re: I am going back to basic

In my opinion, from your brief description, is that this is a behavioural problem and not a training problem. No amount of leads and treats are going to stop aggressive/nervous behaviour.

Your dog has been seriously under-socialised, through no fault of your own and as such I would say you need professional help.

You can do training along side a rehabilitation programme, but I would not focus on this.

Have you sought any professional advice yet?

Yes i have many have said to me that, go back to basic's would be great as it would give him a re-fresher back into training.
Although it wouldn't cure the aggression. (Training course for that)
In the long run i want to get him into Agility as that is something he would be fab at.

See the confusing thing is, Family members that have looked after him or taken him out for walks, dont have the same problem as me.

So i'm not sure if my fear of whats happened with the attack is making him worse??

Re: I am going back to basic

If it is only you that has the problem with aggression and not other family members, then you know what the answer is......

Cesar Milan says "I train people and rehabilitate dogs". His mantra makes a lot of sense to me.

Don't get me wrong, I am not knocking training, but I sometimes think people see this as the answer, rather than work on the psychological problems that the dog has (not saying this in your case as I don't know).

Is his aggression just with other dogs and only when you are present?

Re: I am going back to basic

yes your fear will make him worse

He'll pick up on you being nervous/scared and it will pass on to him, I was doing the same with zeb i would tense when we met a staff (he was attacked by one, and then very nearly attacked by another) i would tense and be on edge. He'd start on the other dog straight away even from the age of about 5months so now i try and relax and keep my body loose and ignore him to a certain degree. If i feel he's starting a problem (which he still does with one staff dog just dont think he likes him much!) i call him over and ask him to sit and stay with me

Back to basics will help but you will prob need abit more help even if its just to help you get over the attack and relax when walking him.

You could also with the back to basic training get him focused on you (food helps lol) when another dog walks past, This something i will be starting with zeb not because of aggression hes the other way around he thinks every dog wants to say hello to him lol

Very true!

When I took on my first two rescue's, I knew nothing about dogs and how they communicate. I was totally out of control on walks and the dogs would be like wild animals with other dogs that we met. Even now although I have dealt with their aggression and they are off lead at the park. I cannot walk them on a lead where we live (in peace anyway!) because for me, the memory of their behaviour will never go (the aggression was that bad). As soon as I see another dog I tense up and it starts it off.

My solution is to walk them somewhere else and to move house (not moving just for that), so that I get a chance to start again, but with knowledge on how to prevent it starting again.

In my opinion, in most cases it is the human that hinders a dogs rehabilitation. Dogs live in the moment, where we remember and worry about past events and future.
